TIMETABLE
DRY BLUB TEMPERATURE

Dec - Feb are the coldest months reaching below 20 C

during mornings

the DBT stays between 27 C - 37 C during most of the

year with the hottest hours being between noon and 4
pm.
Jiwani is a coastal city so the temperatures are
generally lower in comparison to those of New Halfa.
the sea breeze is a contributor to the lowering of
temperatures.

the temp. stays 27 C - 37 C most of the year

Dec - Feb are the coldest months reaching below 20 C

during mornings

the temp. goes above 37 C most of the year during mid-day

hours

the DBT goes above 37 C during afternoon hours

dominantly from Mar - Jun and less frequently during
Sep - Oct. even in winters only the morning hours see
temps. below 27 C staying between 27 C and 37 C
during the afternoon.
New Halfa is in the midst of a desert which results in
higher overall temperatures when compared to
Jiwani.
TIMETABLE
RELATIVE HUMIDITY

Jun - Sep stays 60 - 80% during the day

the RH exceeds 80% during the night and morning hours

with dryness during the day. this suggests the
evaporation of precipitation is high during day time
exhibiting the hot and humid yet dry summers climate
classification. the humidity is comparatively high,
annually.
winters receive days with <20% RH

July goes above 60% during the morning and night hours

predominantly RH stays below 40% all year round

Feb - Jun are the driest months

the RH remains 0% and 40% most of the year and

rarely exceeds the 80% mark in July. this significance
difference between two cities with similar climate
classification is mainly that Jiwani is coastal so the air is
more humid.
PSYCHROMETRIC CHART
JIWANI
greater RH levels

the main strategies employed are sun shading, dehumidification, cooling and heating. night and morning
temperatures during winters decrease enough to require heating methods. adding natural ventilation techniques
reduces required cooling loads, so, wind patterns should be studied to make use of this strategy. natural
ventilation if channeled properly can reduce affects of humidity indoors.
PSYCHROMETRIC CHART
NEW HALFA
greater DBT

the main strategies employed are sun shading, dehumidification and cooling. like in Jiwani, adding natural ventilation
techniques reduces required cooling loads, so, wind patterns and local NV methods should be studied to make use of this
strategy. an added strategies is internal heat gain methods which links to relatively cooler nights in arid climates.
insulated walls can be designed or materials that capture heat during the day and release it during the night can be used.
COMPARISON
internal heat gain strategies are employed to
increase comfort levels in New Halfa.
natural ventilation techniques can be employed
in both cities to reduce cooling loads.
Jiwani requires heating strategies in winters
especially during night and morning hours.
dehumidification is required for both cities.

DIURNAL
AVERAGES
DBT/WBT & RADIATION

max. mean DBT between 35-37 °C in May

min. mean DBT at 15 °C in January

Little difference between DBT and WBT, especially during

summer months (marked with circles) means greater relative
humidity

Generally low diffuse radiation and higher direct normal

radiation which means little cloud cover and plenty of sunlight

DBT closer to comfort zone in winter than in summer meaning

indoor environment management becomes more important in
NEW HALFA summer months

max. mean DBT at 42.8 °C in May

min. mean DBT at 20 °C in January

Comparatively greater difference between DBT and WBT,

New Halfa is less humid than Jiwani

Generally, low diffuse radiation and higher direct normal

radiation, similar to Jiwani, meaning cloud cover is similar in
both cities

DBT out of comfort zone for most of the year

GENERALLY, OVERALL CLIMATE OF JIWANI IS MORE

COMFORTABLE THAN NEW HALFA W.R.T DBT

SUN SHADING
CHART
SHADED VS. EXPOSED HOURS

Lots of direct radiation which means ample shading

required

Summer Months - only 231 of 1858 hours exposed in

hot/warm temperatures
only 12.4% of hours exposed

Winter Months - only 18 of 108 hours shaded in

cool/cold temperatures
only 8.7% of hours shaded

winter- spring

Since Jiwani is a coastal city, breezes also help regulate

heat during the hot months

Shading strategies like operable shading devices,

kinetic facades and adjustable louvers can be adopted
to further improve management of indoor environment

NEW HALFA STRATEGIES

59, 37 - reducing AC needs

68 - may not work as light weight construction material is not preferred in desert climates
32, 57 - minimize glazing - glaIng on north
65 - high ceilings and tall windows protected by overhands and verandahs
38 - may not work due to availability in a less developed region
30 - may not work high performance glazing is expensive
35, 56 - natural ventilation with appropriate shading over windows
33 - depends on construction techniques and lifestyle
17 - vegetation
56 - screened areas like patios provide passive comfort
26 - may or may not work depending on availability
46 - may not work for some people
43 - light colored building materials
25 - not needed as is is not a wet climate
18 - small floor area
42 - fans / indoor air motion dec need of AC
27 - soil is dry, not moist
