Examination No.3 / Final Examination

Instructions. Solve the following situational problems. Write your final

answer in the first page of your answer sheet. Solution to each problem should
start in the second page. No credit for a correct answer without a correct solution.
One point each per problem.

Situational Problem No. 1

A cantilever retaining wall with cross section shown in Figure 1 is to retain a mass of soil
having a unit weight of 16 kN/m3 and a surcharge pressure intensity of 20000 Pa. If the
wall is to rest on a soil having a bearing capacity of 240 kPa and an angle of internal
friction 330 40”, µ = 0.45, ɣc = 2400 kg/ m3, 𝛽 = 0, determine the following

1. the value of the active pressure in kN;

2. the value of the righting moment in kN m;
3. the value of the overturning moment in kN m;
4. the location of the net vertical force (pressure) at the base from the toe in m;
5. the factor of safety against overturning, is it safe ?;
6. the factor of safety against sliding, is it safe ?;
7. the distance of the net vertical force (pressure) at the base referred from the
base centerline in meter, if any;
8. the minimum value of the soil pressure developed at the base in kPa;
9. the maximum value of the soil pressure developed at the base in kPa;

Note: For the righting moment, the soil in the toe side need not be neglected. Only when
computing overturning moment it is to be neglected.

Situation Problem No.2

A continuous wall is supported on three rows of piles spaced 90 cm on center. The

longitudinal pile spacing is 90 cm in the 1st and 2nd rows and 180 cm in the 3rd row. A
resultant vertical load on the wall amounts to 150kN/m of the wall and coincides with the
2nd row piles.

11. What is the eccentric moment in the typical pile group in kg-cm?
12. What is the modified polar moment of inertia, in cm?
13. What is the amount of load per pile in the 1st row in kg?
