Lesson
Summarizing Key Information from a Text
1
Summarizing key Information from a text is a skill that everyone must learn and you, grade 7
students must master. It will help you understand a text or anything that you wish to understand
especially when you’re in a hurry. Failing to master the skill will leave you a problem in your reading
comprehension along the way as you progress academically and individually.
What’s In
It is a tool that you can use in understanding a text most especially when reading
longer passages. According to University of Toronto, summarizing or distilling
important concepts into one or two paragraphs is a useful study tool and good writing
practice. To you students, it is essential that you learn the art of making a summary. One reason
is for you to be capacitated in retelling what you have understand from the original text and second
is to establish quick understanding or comprehension of any texts when reading. In summarizing
key information from a text, varied summarizing techniques can be used and these will be thoroughly
discussed in this module.
Instruction: Read the fable and answer the probing questions that follow.
Her parents would always tell her not to display herself too much in the open or she might get
caught by children and butterfly collectors. But she wouldn’t listen to them. Until one morning, she was
trapped into a net and pair of big hands captured her.
She was killed and dried and was pasted on a board covered with glass. Her wish that the world
would see her beauty was granted. She was in a frame displayed in a museum.

Instruction: Fill in the WINGS PART with 4 key information of the text and title in-between
ANTENNAE based on what you have understood from the fable.
What is It
Are you now starting to heat up for our discussion? If you are, then you are indeed ready to
deepen your understanding on how to summarize key information from a text. In this part of the
module, you will be introduced to some of the few basic techniques that you can use in case-by-
case basis. Always remember that these techniques help you shorten or summarize a thought or
key information, so the outcome will be brief and concise.
1. Skimming
It is a reading technique that uses rapid eye movement to look for key words at a rush or
quickly in order to understand a reading text or any other materials (Butte College, 2019) and what
you get from skimming is the birds-eye-view or an overview. Below are scenarios that show
skimming strategy in summarizing key information.
4
Example No. 1
You are in Watsons or grocery store to buy a lotion and you wonder which brand to
choose but you don’t have specific standards to look for, so you check on each available
product and look into its label for general information. Then, you confirmed your
understanding with the sales lady in the section before finally deciding which to buy.
Example No. 2
Your English teacher assigned you to research on Filipino myth showing the creation
of the world. You google the keyword “myth” and find plenty sources. You don’t know which
to choose exactly so you check on each source by quickly reading it to get a general view.
Based on the scenarios presented above, skimming gives you an overview of the lotion and
the myth. Using this technique allows you to quickly summarize the key information without digging
into specific and elaborative details for a long time.
2. Scanning
It is a reading technique that focuses on specific information to understand a text or any
materials. Browsing information or answers from an anticipated questions or thoughts in your heads.
Example No. 1
You are in Watsons or grocery store to buy a whitening lotion and you wonder which
brand to choose, so you check on the available products, carefully reading for information
on whitening ingredients that the product has. Later, you decide to buy the product which
has the most kogic and vitamin C content.
Example No. 2
Your English teacher assign you to research on the Filipino myth, Tunkung Langit and
Alunsina. She tasks the class to describe the character of Alunisna by providing her likely
and unlikely attitude.
In the first example, you look for specific content of a –lotion which a whitening ingredient
while in the second example, the teacher narrows down the assignment from the given myth to a
specific trait of the female character. Thus, it can be distinguished that scanning is a lot more
time-and-brain consuming than skimming.
1. Paraphrasing
It is a reading technique that restates an idea out of the original text. Take a look at the
example below which is taken from the fable presented earlier.
5
In the paraphrased idea, it mentions the key information about the beautiful butterfly which is
on how beautifully she flies and flaps her wings to make all other butterflies and dragon flies
envious of her. Obviously, the paraphrased idea should be shorter in number of words or
sentences but should be conveying the same ideas stated from the original text.
2. Noting Details
This technique is a lot more specific and structured than the previous three techniques.
This is usually used when summarizing stories or long texts. The key information or pieces of
information of the text are organized or summarized based on the elements or evidences that
categorically elaborates the main idea. You may also use non-linear texts like semantic map,
Venn diagram and Caterpillar diagram as well as tables.
Read the creation myth below and study how it is summarized in the succeeding pages.
In the beginning everything was shapeless and formless. The earth, the sky, the sea, and the
air were almost mixed up. In a word, there was only confusion. Then from the depth of this formless
void there appeared the god Tungkung Langit and the goddess Alunsina.
It was not known just where these two deities came from but it is related by old Bisayan folk
that Tungkung Langit fell in love with Alunsina. After he had courted her for many years, they married
and made their home in the highest part of heaven. There the water was always warm and the
breeze was forever cool. In this place order and regularity began.
Tungkung Langit was a loving, hard-working god. He wanted to impose order over the
confused world. He decided to arrange the world so that the heavenly bodies would move regularly.
On the other hand, Alunsina was a lazy, jealous, selfish goddess. She sat at the window all day
doing nothing.
Sometimes she would leave her home, sit down by a pool near the door, and comb her long,
jet-black hair all day long. One day Tungkung Langit told his wife that he would be away for some
time. He said he must make time go on smoothly and arrange everything in the world.
When he was gone, Alunsina set the breeze to spy on Tungkung Langit. Tungkung Langit
found this out and he became very angry. After he returned home, he told her that it was ungodly of
her to be jealous since there were no other gods in the world except the two of them.
Alunsina resented this reproach, and they quarreled. In his anger, Tungkung Langit drove his
wife away. No one knew where she went. Several days later, Tungkung Langit felt very lonely. He
realized that he should not have lost his temper. But it was too late.
Once vibrant with Alunsina’s sweet voice, his home became cold and desolate. In the morning
when he woke up, he would find himself alone. In the afternoon when he came home, he would feel
the same loneliness creeping deep in his heart because there was no one to meet him at the
doorstep or soothe the aching muscles of his arms.
6
For months, Tungkung Langit was in utter desolation. He could not find Alunsina, try hard as
he would. And so, in desperation, he decided to do something in order to forget his sorrows. For
months and months, he thought but his mind seemed pointless; his heart weary and sick. He needed
something to ease his lonely world.
One day, while he was sailing across the regions of the clouds, a thought came to him. He
would make the sea and the earth, and the earth and the sea suddenly appeared. However, the
somber sight of the lonely sea and the barren land irritated him. So, he came down to earth and
planted the ground with trees and flowers.
Then he took his wife’s treasured jewels and scattered them in the sky, hoping that when
Alunsina would see them she might be induced to return home. The goddess’s necklace became
the stars, her comb the moon and her crown the sun. However, despite Tungkung Langit’s efforts,
Alunsina did not come back.
Until now, some elders of Panay say Tungkung Langit lives alone in his palace in the skies.
Sometimes, he would cry out his pent-up emotion and his tears would fall down upon the earth.
When it thunders hard, it is Tungkung Langit sobbing, calling for his beloved Alunsina to come back,
entreating her so hard that his voice reverberates across the fields and the countryside.

The characters in the story are Tungkung Langit who is loving and hardworking god and
Alunsina who is lazy, jealous and selfish goddess. Tungkung Langit imposed order in the heavenly
bodies so they would move regularly while Alunsina just sat at the window all day long and
sometimes sat and comb her jet-black hair.
One day, Tungkung Langit left Alunsina to keep on imposing order with everything that is in
the world. Secretly, Alunsina set the breeze to spy on Tungkung Langit which he eventually found
out. He came home and quarreled with Alunsina emphasizing that there’s no one to be jealous
with since they were the only beings in the world but Alunsina resisted. Tungkung Langit was driven
madder and caused him to drive his wife away. Days passed but Alunsina did not return. This
made Tungkung Langit very lonely from morning till night.
He tried to look for Alunsina and do something to ease his lonely world but became pointless.
Until a thought came to his mind when he was sailing across the region of clouds. He made the
earth and the sea, planted trees and flowers to brighten up the somber nights and barren land,
scattered the Alunsina’s necklace jewel in the sky which turned into stars, comb into moon and her
crown into sun. Hoping that Alunsina could see it wherever she was and persuade her to come
home with her husband. It is believed that thunder is his way of calling Alunsina to come back while
rain is his pent-up emotion falling to the earth every time he sobbed out of his desolation.

The strongest typhoon of the year also triggered deadly landslides that buried several houses in the
southern part of Luzon’s most populous island, officials said. Rolly was a “super typhoon” when it made
landfall on Catanduanes Island before dawn, packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 225 kilometers
(140 miles) per hour.
It was downgraded a few hours later as it swept across Luzon and reduced intensity as it headed
towards Metro Manila, where the sprawling city of 12 million was bracing for strong winds in the evening.
“Destructive winds and intense rainfall” were affecting areas in the typhoon’s path, including
provinces near the capital, the state weather forecaster warned in its latest update. Rolly comes a week
after Typhoon Quinta hit the same region of the natural disaster-prone archipelago, killing 22 people.
At least seven people were killed in Albay province, Civil Defense said in a statement.
Several of the victims died in rain-induced landslides of volcanic ash that police said engulfed numerous
houses in two adjacent villages near the active Mayon volcano in the province.
“We have recovered three bodies and are looking for three more,” said Major Domingo Tapel, chief of
police in Guinobatan town.
The roofs of at least two evacuation centers were torn off by the wind’s force, while floods inundated
some villages…
