Lesson # 6.2- Monitoring and Evaluation of Learner Progress and Achievement

ASSESSMENT

Direction: Observe and discuss how your resource teacher monitors the following:

Seatwork/Worksheet:
My resource teacher roams around the room and checks on students' progress on their
worksheets, especially activities. Additionally, when students have questions regarding the
seatwork, they approach her, and she answers their concerns delicately and warmly. She is not
strict with them.
Students’ comprehension during the discussion:
To monitor students' comprehension during discussion, my resource teacher would stop
between paragraphs and chapters and ask students questions to stimulate an open discussion and
share opinions and experiences.
Examination:
During the examination, she would not be around but asked a clerk to take up her
position because, as the guidance facilitator of the school, she had other things to work on. Yet,
she checks on them from time to time.
Homework:
My resource teacher uses the platform Messenger, especially the group chat, to remind
students of their homework and ask for updates. Moreover, she would motivate them to do their
best, and she would answer their queries without delay.

Please read the following questions carefully and respond to them.

1. How are you going to evaluate and monitor an advisory class? Give examples to
substantiate your response.

Monitoring an advisory class is challenging. I believe that checking on them at the

end of the week is important. Therefore, I would conduct a class meeting every Friday
before they go home to their respective homes and enjoy the weekend. In this class
meeting, I would ask students about their social-emotional well-being, updates on their
academic performance, and other areas. Moreover, during the weekend, they will write in
their journal what happened during their week in school; they could write about their
problems, challenges, strengths, and memorable experiences. The students will submit
these journals every Monday. As the advisor, I will read these journals and talk about the
general things they have in common to spur open discussion during Friday meetings, and
together, we will solve and talk about it as a class.

2. In the context of students’ learning, in your opinion, what is the most effective strategy
for evaluating and recognizing students’ accomplishments? Why? (Support your answer
with your readings/ references)

A holistic, equitable approach that fosters student motivation and growth is the
most successful method for evaluating and acknowledging students' achievements.
Therefore, I believe in public recognition, such as giving tokens, certificates, and awards.
Based on my experiences as a student, I feel satisfied and motivated when my hard work
and effort are acknowledged by receiving certificates and awards; I just feel proud of my
achievements--- of myself. Hence, public recognition is the most effective strategy for
evaluating and recognizing students’ accomplishments. To support this argument, a study
by Bliven & Jungbauer (2021) has shown that student recognition positively impacts
student retention and academic success in a competency-based educational model.

3. Discuss the importance of providing constructive feedback to students to improve their

learning.

Giving students constructive criticism is crucial to enhancing their academic

performance and learning. Second, feedback that is both constructive and positive can be
inspiring. Students are more likely to be engaged and driven to keep learning when they
receive acknowledgment for their accomplishments and efforts. Third, feedback gives
students specific guidance on how to get better. It allows them to concentrate on areas that
want improvement and offers realistic recommendations for improvement. Lastly, a positive
teacher-student connection is fostered by providing both constructive and positive comments.
It proves that teachers are dedicated to their students' success and are concerned about their
development.
