1. INTRODUCTION
On S20 engines the main starting valve assembly is equipped with 3 electro–pneumatic valves.
This Service Bulletin describes their correct control mode as well as a modification to the valve
block in order to improve starting behaviour.
Please find on enclosures S-9.1/1 to S-9.1/10 control diagrams for both governor arrangements as
well as spare part lists of the starting valve assembly suitable for your engine.

This Service Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective pages
or tables of the Service Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual, Maintenance
Manual or Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or Book.

2. CORRECT STARTING SEQUENCE

2.1. Engines with Starting Air Valves in the Cylinder Head

The starting sequence consists of maximum 3 start attempts within 20s. The engine can be restarted
with the crankshaft still turning.

2.2. Engines with an Air Starter Motor

On engines with an air starter motor, the crankshaft must be at a complete standstill when activating
the air starter motor. Therefore the engine has to be started with max. 3 attempts of max. 4s each
with complete standstill in between (takes about 30s time delay between two attempts).

3. CONTROL MODE OF THE ELECTRO-PNEUMATIC VALVES

The main starting valve assembly is equipped with three electro-pneumatic valves. A start valve
(126HA), a shut–down valve (126HB) and an oil pressure shut–down suppression valve (126HC).
Engines equipped with Woodward UG8/10 Governors have an additional stop solenoid in the
governor. It is activated in the same mode as the shut–down valve 126HB. (Please refer to table
below and sketch overleaf).

4. MODIFICATION TO THE STARTING VALVE ASSEMBLY
The existing pneumatic control system of early delivered engines did not always function correctly
during starting and acceleration. Especially the oil pressure shut–down suppression valve (126HC)
sometimes showed a malfunction depending on the action of the start valve (126HA) and the
closing pressure of the main starting valve.
With the introduction of an additional valve (45HB) this dependency has been eliminated. The
function of the two valves 126HA and 126HC is completely independent from each other as their
venting bores are now separated.
To ensure a trouble-free starting sequence, the above described modification should be carried out
as soon as possible.
The necessary retrofit kit together with the repair drawing for the modification to the air piping can
be obtained from Wärtsilä NSD Switzerland Ltd in Winterthur.
This kit contains the following:
1 Connection plate Code 4304/A304
1 Connection cube Code 4303/A307
1 3/2–Way valve Code 4603/A109
2 Valve body Code 4603/A114
together with the necessary bolts, joints and the repair drawing for the modification to the existing
air piping.
Important: When connecting the air piping, care should be taken to mount the ”valve
bodies” correctly as shown on the sketch below.
