IDENTIFICATION OF ACID RADICALS - I

AIM: To identify the acid radicals namely Carbonates, Sulphides and Sulphites.

PRINCIPLE: Acid radicals such as carbonates, Sulphides, and Sulphites can be

identified with the help of the gases they liberate by the action of dil.HCl.

PROCEDURE:

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

1. To a little of the given a) A brisk effervescence of a colourless and a) The gas given
substance taken in a dry test odourless gas, putting of the burnt splint, out is CO2 and acid
tube add about 4 ml of dil changing moist blue litmus red and changing radical present in
HCl. Heat if there is no lime water milky, takes place. the given substance
reaction in the cold. CO32- + 2HCl → H2O + 2Cl- + CO2 is carbonate.
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
(Milky)

b) A colourless gas with the smell of rotten eggs b) The gas given
changing lead acetate paper shining black, out is H2S and the
evolves. acid radical present
S2-+ 2HCl → H2S + 2Cl- in the given
(CH3COO)2Pb + H2S → 2CH3COOH + PbS substance is
Black sulphide.

c)A colourless gas with a choking smell, The gas given out is
changing potassium dichromate green evolves. SO2 and the acid
SO32- + 2HCl → H2O + 2Cl- + SO2 radical present in
K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 + 3SO2 → K2SO4 + H2O + the given solution is
Cr2(SO4)3 sulphite.

RESULT :
The acid radicals namely Carbonat, Sulphide and Sulphite are thus identified.
