How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

My students will be using this tool to create a powerpoint focusing on the health
standard HE3.7.b Demonstrate healthy practices. This will be introduced in unison with
the technology standard 1.1d: Students understand the fundamental concepts of
technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current
technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.
This standard will be introduced as a prompt for the students' e-books made on
powerpoint. Students will be made aware of their goals with a list of requirements the
students need to fulfill in their e-book. Students will utilize the technology by making
their e-book on powerpoint. The teacher will show an example of an e-book made on
powerpoint, address the standard given for the topic and give students an overview of
all of the tools on powerpoint and how to use them. Feedback will be provided to the
student through a note/comment on each slide talking about what the student did
correctly or what the student needs to work on. I will conclude the lesson by asking if
any of the students would like to share their e-book with the class. After a few
volunteers show their work, the teacher will conclude their lesson with noticings and
wonderings. The teacher will address any wonderings/questions the class may have.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that

gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
Creating powerpoints is fun and exciting for a student, and it gives them an opportunity to be
creative. I will manage classroom behavior with this technology by setting a 15 minute time
limit for a rough draft of their e-books. Students will turn their e-book into the teacher for
revisions. On a later date or time students will be reminded of their learning goal and the list
of requirements for the e-book. Following the refresher of the learning goal students will be
given an additional 15-30 minutes to read through the feedback the teacher left, and tweak
their e-book before presenting their books.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

These activities and use of technology through powerpoint enhance the learning experience
for students because students are given the freedom to create their own story. Students will
need to problem solve and troubleshoot on their own or collaboratively to successfully
navigate through powerpoint and create their e-book. This tool supports the principle of
Engagement components of universal design for learning. Powerpoint supports engagement
because students need to actively be engaged and have a game plan as to what they want
their e-book to look like. Students must have their undivided attention on the tutorial of how
to use powerpoint and all of its tools. Students can also engage and collaborate with other
students to problem solve and create visuals for their e-book.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel the activities I have created will impact students' learning greatly. Students will now
have the background knowledge of how to navigate and utilize powerpoint as a presentation
tool. Students can use this knowledge to present knowledge learned in other grades and
classes. I look forward to implementing the part of the lesson that gives students the freedom
to create a unique presentation based off of a standard or topic. This gives students the
ability to express themselves and show off their knowledge of a topic.
