 Recommendcd Callbratlon Procedure

1. lt Is lmpo"ant 10 pump 1o ilrcs (approx} or air 1hrcugh the llowhead

prlor to commencing this procedure.

2. The user ls asked lo enter the ambient tempera~Jre. THl3 MUST BE

MEASURED ACCURATELY BEFORE ENTERING.

3. Nr must te pum:ied l hrough the l lowhead when requested on the

screen. The air musl be pumped lhrough the llowhead ror at least one
second continuousl{ or it will be ignored.

4' Al the end or the first stroke of the Syringe,. the user may exrt the
rovtine or pump mcre aJr to ifco:atHt Lhe ca11orat1on vollme.

5. II a second stroke or lhe S'/ringe ls to be perlormed it is important 10

7. When lhe air pumping rouline is exiled the measured volume is

displayed and the user is requesled lo enter the actual totar volume
pumoed. This is 1hen compared with lhe measur&d v~Juc ..1nd a
difference indicatron is displayed.

8. The user 1s then olfered the Chance to change lhe caßbratlon. This is
onfy necessa,y IF THE ERROR IS GREATER THAN 3%,

9. Once the check or adjustment is completed a Calibralion Report is

printed.

INSTRUMENT ACCESS
Swilch MAINS POWER OFF and disconnect power supply lead from side
of inslrumen1. Remcve ßowhead connee1ion tubing lrom the conneC1or an
base. Turn unit over and pface on toam ·mal or other sah surface to avoid
damage to tacia.

Slacken and remove the seven screws indicaled an :he illustrafion uslng a

conlrast control is soldered to the ooard. lt is therefore necessary 10
unsolder lhis and re-solder the reptacement part intc positlon. Ensure that
lhe replacement Is pushed down squarely onlo the board before
resoldering, to maintain correct atigr.ment.

Powor !niet Socket • 31.625SPR

Refer to figures 7 and 8 for internal Instrument actess. The power inlel
socket Is a slide fit lnto the base panel and is comected to the main PCB
via discrete wires; lhese should be unsoldered al lhe socket and lhe
replacement fitted in ils place.

On/Off Swltch • 31.639SPR

Refer to flgures 7 and 8 for inlernal Instrument access. Removal ol the maln
PCB l rom the base is required when replacing this component (reter lo
Main PC6 Se,vice Exchange · 44.031SPR fittlng instructions) . The on/off
switch must be unsoldered from the board and the replacement soldered
back into position.

Bulkhead Connector • 44.060SPR

Reter to figures 8 and 9 lor intemal Instrument access. The pressure
tawing is held In place by an M4 nut. Remove the 11exible pipe trom the
pressure tapplng an(f unscrew the retairing nut. The refittlng procedure is a
n;versal of the removal proceOJre.

Keypad Complote • 44.002SPR

Refer lo figurcs 7 and 8 for Interna! insIrument acces,. Lay the case face
down on a soft surtace and remove Ihe lcur screws relaining the keypad
PCB. Lifl away the PCB which will expose the rubber membrane, remove
lhe ccmplcle keypad aI t~is stage and discard. Fit the new keypad moulding
to the case and drop the keys lnto lheir aper.ures. The new rubber
membrane locates i n the rear face ol IM keypad moulding and ls 11apped by
ättlng lhe new PCB. Ensure free operation of Keys belore finally tightening
'ixing screws.

The LCO surround is fitted to the case uSing double-Sided adhesive tape. To
remove it simply tever it ouI of lts location, remove an, residual tape from
lhe case, aM fit the replacemenI usin9 the 1ape provided. 11

Refer to ligures 7 and 8 for internal Instrument access. Remove tour screws

posttion by double-siced adheslve tape. To remove push careiully on the
front lace and liit clear The new pari is fitted, ensuring that no resic'ual
lape is left i n the recess of the case. Use the new Iape provided when
filting the replacemenl.

Rubber Strap • 44.014SPR

To fit a replacement s:rap remove the damaged part and teed the open end
of the new part into the retaining slot: use a smalt screwdriver if necessar1
to push lt home.

Paper Roll Clip - 44.016SPR

Paper Tear Bar. 44.017SPR

Rater to tigures 7 and 8 for intemal Instrument aocess. Remove the printer
board assembly (reler to prlnter wlth boal'd • 31.581$PR fttting
instructions). The tear bar is retalned by two spring clips, which must be
prized carefully from 1/lelr lccatlng pins. Replacement is a reversal of lhe
removal procedure.

Main PCB Service Exchange• 44.031SPR

Refer to trgures 7 and 8 lor intemal inslrument acc-ess. Remove plastlc rube
1rom pressure lapping and side power inle! socket out of ils retainlng slot
in the base. Remove two oufer nuts from heat sink pfate and live plastic
r,uls from edges of PCS. D0 NOT REMOVE THE INNER TWO NUTS ON
THE HEATSfNK PU.TE OR THE TWO NUTS WHICH HOLD THE
HEATSINK AND THE PCB TOGETHER. Litt the PCB from the base studS
and remove complete a;serrbly.

Clean heat sink compouncl from base around the heat sink mounting
posltion. A~i)ly heat silk compound provided to unclerside of heat sink on
new PCB and spread evenly. Ensure that plastlc spacers are fitted to 1he
Jive stuos which sup~n the PCB and fit new PCB into position. Replace
all n~1s ar,d tighten. Jo not overtighten plastic nuts. Wipe away excass
heat sink ccmpound irom edges ot heat sinl< plate and refit power inlet
socket and plastic tute to pressure tapping. Reassembte base and casa
12 halves, ensuring conna-..."tion ot inierconr.ecting feads.

relaining the clsptay In uie rear tace of tlle case and llt clear. Cut 10 length,
and stick on foam tape provided around complete perimeter ot the metaJ
housing of the new dispfay. The foam tape has a liner on the rear face which
when removed will ex~ose a seif adhesive tape surtace. Refer to the
removed screen for correct positioning cf lhe foam tape. Dust ingress
between the display and display gfass is prevented by lhe foam. Reassembly
is a re·,ersaJ of the removal proe&.:lures.

Interna! Testing
Reler lo saction 5 (Instrument Access) and remove the chassis ltom tre

Carefully examine all the interoonnectir.g cables and make sure that they a,e
futly lnserted into lhe various sockefs.

PowerSAFE Supply Vollage

Usino .l voltmeter, wilh the> negathte input on zero (TP12). rneiJ:sure the
voltage at the inpuf connedlon to the PCB. This is marked on the PCB as
VP +. The vollage here should be app,oximately 9.5 vohs. ff this vol1age is
not presenl check f0< faulty connections at the power input socket.

On/Off Swlteh
II lhe PowerSAFE wpply vottage is ccrrect then proceed to check the
on/off sw~ch. Place switch in OFF posalcn and with the voltme:e, on zero
volts (TP12) check fhat supply voltage Is present at pln 1 of th& swilch.
Operate the switch and the supply voltage should appear at p;n 2 ol lhe
swftch. ff the supply '°Hage is not present then a fauly switch is indicated.

Jnternal Power Supi:lies

Check that the pow;r supply voltages generated on the PCB are corre<:t.
These are measu,ed between the zero ,oll test polnt (TP12) and posftions
14 on t~,e board marked Nith the relevant voltages.

The supply lor the printer head drive S. 7516.3V can be measured be!Ween
TP12 and TP13.

Liquid Crysal Display

The • 12 Volt supply above is used to drive the LCD (liquid Cr/stal Display}
screen. lf this vofface is not corred then Jhe display will appear blank. H the
SUlllliV is correcl bul the screen is blank or il has become impossible to
change the "viewing angle" ol the display then the contrast potentiometer
should be checked.

Contras! Potentlometer
This device is designated RV2 on the PCS. Ta check !hat ~ is working
correctly, switch ott the instrument and disconnecl lhe power connector

from the PowerSAFE and remove the display ribbon connector fmm PL4.
With an ollm meter measure lhe resistance ol the polenllometer belween ilS
centre connection and lhe ·1 2 voh position marked on the PCS. Rotate lhe
conlrot knob and lhe reading on lhe ohm mew should vary from
approximately zero ohms to 22 kllohms. II the reading is a f1Xed value of 22
kilohms whQrovgr 1h9 conttol is set or the re3cfing i~ cr,.itk: then the
potentiome1er should be replaced.

Printer
ff the printer motor runs when lhe machlne 1s required to print out 1est
inforrnation but the paper remalns blank lhen check the 6 vo~ printer head
supply as mentioned in the paragraph ·tnternal Power S<Jpplies·. ff the
quality of the prinl-oUI has become poor i.e. alpha numeric characters are
not totally bold and the vertical graph axis have become "broken· lines then
1he printer head may have become faulty and lhe printer PCS will require
replace1ne11t.

N.B. Never perform a print-ou1 without paper in the printer mechanlsm or

permanent damage will result immediately. 15
 Erratic Test Rcsults
II lhe spirometer is producing erronecus test resuhs this may be caused ty
thc trimming cepacitors breaki.ng- free from their solder posts. Check tha.t
the two capacttors mounted on solder pins, CTl and CT2, near the
transducer bod'/, are property co.inected.

Also check that th>. screws holding the pressure transducer to the PC3
have rd become locse.
