3. Explain briefly what you know about the American poetry.

***Good luck***

1. Figurative language is a way of using words that is non-literal. Figurative

language expresses meaning through figures of speech (such

as simile, metaphor and personification); these appear frequently in both literature and

everyday conversation.

Figurative language comes in many forms; each classed as a figure of speech. Figures of
speech include:

 Simile
 Metaphor
 Personification
 Idioms
 Metonymy
 Synecdoche
 Hyperboles
 Irony
 oxymoron

Figurative language helps us to express opinions and feelings in ways that plain English
sometimes can't. It can help to express an opinion or communicate a point; it can also help to
make the language more colorful, vivid and engaging.
2. Two ways in which authors communicate with readers is by the use of mood and tone.
Although both techniques can elicit particular emotions central to understanding a story, the
terms are easily confused.
Mood in literature is firmly rooted in the locale or setting of the story that reveals the subject.
The physical atmosphere is built scene by scene to create a sense of time, place and reality.

Tone, on the other hand, is less sensual play and more the attitude of the characters toward the
subject at hand. It is strongly related to the narrator’s point of view, delivered most reliably
through choice of words, either explicitly or implicitly. Tone certainly contributes to the
mood of a story, but it is less about creating emotional resonance within the readers and more
about communicating the narrator’s thoughts or state of mind.

mood shows the subject of the story while tone tells the reader what the characters think of

that subject.

3. Poetry from the United States of America. American poetry is the poetry of the United States.
It is most often written in English.
Realism American poetry and entire literature are far more realistic and pessimistic in
portraying life and the world. Whereas, English poetry also gets realistic but it is not as direct
as American one and the reality of English literature gets transformed in portraying characters
and life.
American poets write about nature, society, the human condition, religion, and many other
topics that encapsulate the human experience.
