A gypsy woman, Madam Sinza Heron (Naomi Rapace), helped Holmes the adventure this
time. There was also Holmes brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) who came to be an
accomplice of the detective this time.
Arguably, the visual effect of ‘A Game of Shadow’ is more stable than its predecessor. A
few slow-movement scenes later find in the cease-fire. Colors are displayed also feels right.
Face as those made by Holmes and several other characters in the film guaranteed to invite
laughter. The chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is not be doubted anymore.
Since in the first film, the two men were able to captivate the audience and not be missed.

Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” was probably the most anticipated movie of
the year 2010. But is it any good? First of all, I should probably mention that hardcore
Lewis Carroll fans may find it very disappointing. The movie is merely based on the book.

dream of finding herself in Wonderland every night, until one day it happens in real life.
Her arrival was expected. Alice is supposed to save the inhabitants from the evil Red
Queen and get the reign back to her kind sister, the White Queen. She knows nothing
about it, but she is meant to be the knight in shining armor, both figuratively and literally
speaking.

Indonesia’s Biggest Cinematic Achievement

I believe there’s a huge responsibility in adapting the number 1 bestselling novel. The book
was certainly popular and everybody worships this work of Andrea Hirata. I didn’t expect
anything too spectacular from the movie, because as spectacular the book supposedly to be a
letdown.
Laskar Pelangi is no doubt, one of the best Indonesian movies. It beats the Denias:
Senandung di Atas Awan, and Ayat-Ayat Cinta (The Verses of Love). It’s a 5 star masterpiece in
Indonesia, but still deserves 4.5-5 Star in Hollywood stage. The movie contains social and
educational issues and strongly declares that everyone needs education and everyone needs to be
educated. We can learn many life lessons from the movie.
I can’t saying that Laskar Pelangi is a marvelous picture. As a matter of fact, I can’t even
name a flaw! The casts are perfect, as many of the stars are Indonesian leading and popular actors.
Credit to Cut Mini Theo since she brought such a strong performance as a determined teacher.
Author Andrea is a genius since the storyline is beautiful, touching, and engaging at the same time.
So get yourself boxes of Kleenex to watch the movie. Thanks to director Riri Reza and producer
Mira Lesmana for making the movie good and safe it from being a letdown, even the author was
amazed with the crew’s job and state the movies is better than his original writing. In additions,
the movie is exposed the scenery in Belitong Island which is beautiful.

Tideland

When I saw Terry Gilliam’s Tideland at the Melbourne Film Festival last year, my
immediate reaction was that the film was unrealizable. Its appearance in Australian cinemas
has obviously proven me wrong. Yet its exposure to a wider population allows the
opportunity to see how many, like me, find the film virtually unwatchable. Gilliam is an
enormously talented filmmaker, and Tideland isn’t bad in any of the usual ways. It’s not
reprehensible, or stupid, or poorly made. But it’s a deeply unpleasant experience that just
doesn’t work at all.
Scripted by Gilliam and Tony Grissoni from Mitch Cullin’s novel, the film tells the
story of a Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), a young girl brought up by junkie parents (Jeff
Bridges and Jennifer Tilly). She’s an intelligent girl, and at film’s start seems to be coping
remarkably well with the unhealthy environment in which she is being brought up. However,
after both parents die she is left alone in an empty farmhouse, accompanied only by her dolls
and the slowly rotting corpse of her father. Even when she makes contact with the
neighbours, she is no closer to achieving responsible care: they, too, are deeply disturbed.
Gilliam has the start of a really good idea here, in the way he depicts Jeliza-Rose’s
deteriorating mental health by showing her play becoming increasingly warped and
unhealthy. Yet despite spending a long, long, long time establishing Jeliza-Rose’s fantasy
world, Gilliam can’t really bring that inner life into clear enough focus. He tries to convey
the wonder of the child’s perspective with a sweeping camera and lush, golden
cinematography, but he can never get us inside Jeliza-Rose’s head, and the longer he keeps
at it the more distant from her we become. Worse, his attempts sour into a kind of syrupy
whimsy that recalls Spielberg at his worst.
The film starts with an undercurrent of grotesque humour, and the gothic tone
becomes more overt as the film progresses. As we learn more about Jeliza-Rose’s new
neighbours (and as her father’s decomposition steadily progresses) the film becomes livelier,
but it also becomes increasingly disturbing. The humour becomes more morbid, and the film
itself increasingly hard to watch as it touches on issues of inappropriate sexual relationships
involving both children and the mentally disabled.
Obviously there is a place for films to tackle such challenging themes, and it can also
be expected that when films do so the result may be discomforting. But there is a
corresponding responsibility that such material brings with it. I’m not suggesting there is
anything inappropriate in Gilliam’s message, but rather that his intent is muddled, and that
with such sensitive topics there is a heightened obligation to have control over your material.
Unfortunately, Gilliam raises these issues but doesn’t seem to know how to resolve them.
The end result alternates stretches of boredom with moments of skin-crawling queasiness.
Gilliam has reportedly had to reassure audiences at festivals that it’s okay to laugh, but I
suspect more will be wondering if it’s okay to leave.
It’s a real shame that Tideland is such a miserable experience, because Gilliam, for
all his faults, is one of the most talented filmmakers around, and he already struggles to find
financing for his projects. The film Lost in La Mancha famously chronicled his aborted
version of Don Quixote, which started production but was scuttled without being finished.
Yet I have the feeling that the abandonment of Don Quixote won’t prove as damaging for his
career as the completion of Tideland.
30. What is the text about?
A. Mitch Cullin’s novel.
B. The story of a Jeliza-Rose.
C. Therry Gilliam’s Tideland film.
D. The experience of Gilliam’s film.
E. A place for films to tackle challenging themes.

D. Tideland is a film of Jeliza-Rose’s miserable experience.
E. Gilliam has struggled to find financing for the film.

A. Gilliam is an enormously talented filmmaker.
B. The film tells the story of a Jeliza-Rose.
C. The film starts with an undercurrent of grotesque humour.

The following text is for questions 40 and 43.

When author Nicholas Sparks sat down to write The Notebook, a tender love story inspired
by the enduring relationship of his wife Cathy's grandparents, he wanted his readers to walk
away with a renewed spirit of hope.
"I'll never forget watching those two people flirt," he recalls. "I mean, you don't see
that very often. They’d been married 67 years, and yet they still loved each other. I wanted to
write a book about that kind of love. I wanted people to know that unconditional love does
exist."
So Sparks created The Notebook, the simple story of Noah Calhoun, a soft spoken
North Carolina outdoorsman who carried his love for the willowy Allie Nelson with him
long after their youthful romance had ended. He paralleled Noah's silent passions with
Allie's haunting thoughts - feelings she could not escape even after she became engaged to
another man. He asked his readers to consider what it might mean if these relatively happy,
middle-aged people found their destinies once again overlapped.
He presented a question all but universal in appeal: What would happen if two people
were given a second chance at the love of a lifetime?
Sparks deftly answers that question. But it's the inspiration drawn from his real life
grandparents that makes The Notebook more than just a novel of flames reignited. The novel
opens and closes with an elderly Noah Calhoun reading aloud from his personal journals and
"notebooks." And as he shares the delicate details, the good with the bad, it's clear he is as
enchanted with Allie in old age as he was on the day they met. "And that’s the legacy of The
Notebook," according to Nicholas Sparks. "When love is real, it doesn't matter what turns
the road takes. When love is real, the joys and possibilities are endless."
