Course Description: From Dickens to Pinter

Overview
This course offers an exploration of English Literature from the Victorian era to the mid-20th
century, focusing on works by Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, James Joyce, Samuel
Beckett, and Harold Pinter.

Course Objectives
- To understand the historical and cultural contexts that influenced the selected works.
- To analyze the thematic concerns, literary styles, and innovations of the texts.
- To explore the interplay between literary form, content, and historical moment.
- To develop critical thinking and analytical skills through close reading and discussion.

Texts to be Analyzed
1. Charles Dickens’ Hard Times - A representation of utilitarianism and the industrial society
to explore its impact on the human, and social relationships.
2. Thomas Hardy’s Selected Poems - An analysis of Hap, The Impercipient, The Darkling
Thrush, After a Journey, focusing on Hardy’s representations of chance, nature, human
emotion, and the passage of time.
3. James Joyce’s Short Stories from Dubliners: Ivy Day in the Committee Room, The Dead, A
Little Cloud, examining Joyce’s portrayal of Irish identity, paralysis, and epiphany.
4. Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot - A close reading-analysis of existentialism to discuss
themes of absurdity, waiting, and the search for meaning.
5. Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter - An exploration of Pinter’s use of language, silence, and
power dynamics, reflecting on the themes of communication and existential angst.
Methodology
The course will employ a combination of lectures, student-led discussions, and close readings.
Students will engage with the texts both critically and creatively, exploring their historical
significance, literary merit, and relevance to contemporary issues.

Week 7: Thomas Hardy, Selected Poems: Hap, the Impercipient, the Darkling Thrush,
After a Journey (1900s)

Week 8: Mid-term Examination (April 1-7)

Week 10: James Joyce’s Ivy Day in the Committee Room (1914)
Week 11: James Joyce’s a Little Cloud (1914)
Week 12: Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (1952) – Act I
Week 13: Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (1952) – Act II
Week 14: Harold Pinter’s the Dumb Waiter (1960)
Week 15: Harold Pinter’s the Dumb Waiter (1960)

Week 17-18: Final Examination (June 3-14)


Make-up Examination: June 24-30
