Gulf of California. Its population has plummeted primarily due to bycatch in illegal gillnets
set for totoaba fish, whose swim bladders are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine.
Javan Rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus): The Javan rhinoceros is one of the rarest large mammals
in the world. It is found only in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. Poaching and
habitat loss have driven its population to critically low levels.
Amur Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis): The Amur leopard is a subspecies of leopard native
to the Primorye region of southeastern Russia and the Jilin Province of northeast China. It
faces threats from habitat loss, poaching, and a lack of prey.
Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus): Found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra,
the Sumatran elephant's population is declining rapidly due to habitat loss, fragmentation,
and human-elephant conflict.
Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis): The saola, also known as the "Asian unicorn," is a critically
endangered species native to the Annamite Range of Vietnam and Laos. It is threatened by
habitat loss, hunting, and bycatch.
Northern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni): The northern white rhinoceros is
functionally extinct in the wild, with only two remaining individuals, both females, under
human care in Kenya. Poaching for their horns has driven them to the brink of extinction.
Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei): Also known as the Yangtze giant softshell
turtle, this species is critically endangered and possibly functionally extinct in the wild. Only a
few individuals remain, primarily in captivity.
Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei): Mountain gorillas are found in the Virunga Mountains
in Central Africa and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Conservation efforts
have helped increase their population in recent years, but they still face threats from habitat
loss, poaching, and human diseases.
Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata): Hawksbill sea turtles are distributed worldwide in
tropical oceans, but their population has declined significantly due to habitat loss, poaching
for their shells, and accidental capture in fishing gear.
South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis): The South China tiger is one of the most critically
endangered tiger subspecies. It is believed to be functionally extinct in the wild, with only a
few individuals remaining in captivity.
These species are just a few examples of the many animals facing extinction due to human
activities such as habitat destruction, poaching, climate change, and pollution. Conservation
efforts are crucial to protecting and preserving these species for future generations.
