Power of Love
What makes our lives meaningful? A majority of people would say the close
relationships we carry in our lives define their meaningful life. We meet a variety of
people throughout each day. Sometimes these strangers become friends, sometimes they
become romantic relationships, and sometimes they remain strangers. In this paper I will
discuss the power of lovethrough attraction, personal bonds, and romance. Many factors
impact the type of people we are attracted to. They include physical attractiveness,
proximity, reciprocity, and similarity. Research shows that the initial phases of romantic
attraction are largely determined by physical appeal (Curran Ruppel, 2012). People s
perception of their own physical appeal also plays a... Show more content on

Loneliness and deprivation effect aspects of our lives negatively, such as our physical
and mental health (Hawkley Cacioppo, 2012). We need frequent contact, fulfilling
social connections, and mutual caring to fulfill our need to belong. Statistically death
rates are higher for people who are single or divorced (Hawkley Cacioppo, 2012). In most
cases marriage provides our strong need to belong. Marriage can also provide love, but
love is a word with a multitude of meanings. To say you love chocolate is very
different from saying you love your child. One way to break down love is to put it into
a few categories: companionate love, passionate love, and compassionate love (Feenstra,
2011). Companionate love is the type of affection we hold for friends, family, and our
marriage. Passionate love involves intense emotional arousal and physical attraction.
This strong desire for another person may be the draw into a relationship, which could
turn into companionate love. But unlike companionate love, passionate love tends to
decline over time. Another type of love is the caregiving type called compassionate
love. It is described as a parent child relationship or a long term friendship. Love can be
divided into even more categories. Robert Sternberg created the triangular theory of love
which describes three aspects of love: intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment
(Feenstra, 2011). How these three combine determines what type of love
The Misinterpretations Of Robert And Of The Blind Husband
This short story is based on a wife who is friends with a blind man by the name of
Robert whom she introduces to her husband when he comes into town to visit her after
visiting his deceased wife s family. Upon his arrival the wife s husband has already
formed his own opinions and ideas of what the blind man should be like from how he
eats, his appearance, and even down to him as a person. But as the story continues the
husband see s that he was wrong and has many misinterpretations of Robert and of the
blindin general. While reading the story I was able to see that the narrator of the story
(the wifes husband) values self esteem, beliefs in the stereotypes, and beliefs in being
open minded.

And in addition to this he also is an individual who is beliefs in being open minded.
After analyzing the narrator as a character I have come to the conclusion that he is a
dynamic character. As defined in the textbook a dynamic character is a character that
not just changes our impression of them but the character themselves change as the
story unfolds and events occur. The narrator did not only change but he altered his
understanding of Robert, of blind people in general. I say this because in the
beginning of the story the narrator acts as an average day host to his wife s guest. But
as the story goes on he starts to open up bit by bit. He holds idle conversations with
Robert and even shares Marijuana with Robert. Where he once was not looking
forward to Robert visiting his home because of a stereotype he had gained from a
movie he had watched, by the end he was completely different. As in different I mean he
had put aside all of his stereotypes, his own thoughts and emotions and opened up to
Robert. In the beginning my impression of the narrator was that he would be distant and
act awkward towards Robert but as the story unfolded my impression changed as he

THE TONE OF A SETTING When having a conversation with someone it is easy to
know how they are feeling by the tone in their voice. If a person is being funny, they
tend to have a smile on their face, but when a person is angry about a particular
subject, the tone of their voice becomes extremely loud and overbearing. While reading
novels or short stories the characters tone is distinguishable because of the author s use
of exclamation points or italicized words. These make the reader understand the
characters emotions and feelings throughout the entire book. As for poems, the tone is
not as recognizable. A reader is not capable of understanding the tone from just simply
glancing at a few words. The tone is derived from several words and... Show more

The remainder of the poem s setting takes place in the United States, where the
speaker and her family now reside. Living in the United States, the speaker s miserable
tone results from the fact that she feels alienated from her children, but now they, go
to American high schools/ They speak English (Line 8 9). English, a language she
does not understand and is, embarrassed at mispronouncing words (Line 16). This
barrier of language has broken off a major form of communication between her
children and her. There once was a time when she would laugh along with her children
as they told jokes, but now all she can do is, stand by the stove and feel dumb, alone
(Line 11). The speaker s setting has distorted her self image. The fact that she now
feels dumb is a completely different feeling from how she felt in Mexico where she,
understood every word they d say (Line 4). Yearning for that familiarity of the bond
between her children and herself she, bought a book to learn English (Line 12). This
is her only way to adjust to her new setting and because she feared that one day she,
will be deaf/ when (her) children need (her) help (Line 21 22). In Anthony Grooms ,
Homespace, the speaker s mind set remains constant from the setting that he had just
returned from and in the new setting where the poem takes place. In contrast to Mora s
poem, Grooms tone never alternates; it is a stable conscience feeling of being in a
