A.DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. What is CULTURE?
● Culture is a concept that encompasses the social behavior, institutions,
and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs,
arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of the individuals in these
groups. Culture is often originated from or attributed to a specific region or
location.
2. What is IDEOLOGY?
● An ideology is a set of beliefs or philosophies attributed to a person or
group of persons, especially those held for reasons that are not purely
epistemic, in which "practical elements are as prominent as theoretical
ones".
3. What is SOCIETY?
● A society is a group of individuals involved in persistent social interaction
or a large social group sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically
subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.
4. What is POPULAR CULTURE?
● Popular culture is generally recognized by members of a society as a set
of practices, beliefs, artistic output and objects that are dominant or
prevalent in a society at a given point in time. Popular culture also
encompasses the activities and feelings produced as a result of interaction
with these dominant objects.
5. What is MASS CULTURE?
● Mass culture emerged in the years following the industrial revolution. The
concept of mass culture defines all the power, behaviors, mythos, and
phenomena which are difficult to resist and which are produced by
industrial techniques and spread to a very large masses. Mass culture
products are standard cultural products produced and transmitted by mass
media only for the mass market.
6. What is FOLK CULTURE?
● Folk culture" describes cultural traditions that are done at a local level and
which are derived from longstanding cultural practices. Folk culture is
separated from popular and high culture by its traditional and localized
nature.
7. What is HIGH & LOW CULTURE?
● High culture is a collection of ideologies, beliefs, thoughts, trends,
practices and works-- intellectual or creative-- that is intended for refined,
cultured and educated elite people. Low culture is the culture of the
common people and the mass.
● High culture commonly refers to the set of cultural products, mainly in the
arts, held in the highest esteem by a culture. In contrast, low culture refers
to such things as gossip magazines, reality television, popular music,
yellow journalism.
