Calorimetry Problems
1. How many milliliters of water at 23 °C with a density of 1.00 g/mL must be mixed with
180 mL (about 6 oz) of coffee at 95 °C so that the resulting combination will have a
temperature of 60 °C? Assume that coffee and water have the same density and the
same specific heat (4.184 J/g °C).
2. How much will the temperature of a cup (180 g) of coffee at 95 °C be reduced when
a 45 g silver spoon (specific heat 0.24 J/g °C) at 25 °C is placed in the coffee and the
two are allowed to reach the same temperature? Assume that the coffee has the
same density and specific heat as water.
3. A 45-g aluminum spoon (specific heat 0.88 J/g °C) at 24 °C is placed in 180 mL (180
g) of coffee at 85 °C and the temperature of the two become equal. What is the final
temperature when the two become equal? Assume that coffee has the same specific
heat as water.
Enthalpy Change
4. When 1.34 g Zn(s) reacts with 60.0 mL of 0.750 M HCl(aq), 3.14 kJ of heat are
produced. Determine the enthalpy change per mole of zinc reacting for the reaction:
Zn(s)+2HCl(aq)⟶ZnCl(aq)+H2(g)
5. When 1.42 g of iron reacts with 1.80 g of chlorine, 3.22 g of FeCl2(s) and 8.60 kJ of
heat is produced. What is the enthalpy change for the reaction when 1 mole of
FeCl2(s) is produced?
6. How much heat is produced by burning 4.00 moles of acetylene under standard state
conditions?
7. How much heat is produced by combustion of 125 g of methanol (CH3OH) under
standard state conditions?
8. How many moles of isooctane must be burned to produce 100 kJ of heat under
standard state conditions?
9. What mass of carbon monoxide must be burned to produce 175 kJ of heat under
standard state conditions?
10. When 2.50 g of methane burns in oxygen, 125 kJ of heat is produced. What is the
enthalpy of combustion per mole of methane under these conditions?
11. A sample of 0.562 g of carbon is burned in oxygen in a bomb calorimeter, producing
carbon dioxide. Assume both the reactants and products are under standard state
conditions, and that the heat released is directly proportional to the enthalpy of
combustion of graphite. The temperature of the calorimeter increases from 26.74 °C
to 27.93 °C. What is the heat capacity of the calorimeter and its contents?
Hess' Law
12. 2CO(g) + O2(g) → 2CO2(g) ΔH = ?
Hg2Cl2(s)⟶2Hg(l)+Cl2(g)
Hg(l)+Cl2(g)⟶HgCl2(s)ΔH=−224kJ
Hg(l)+HgCl2(s)⟶Hg2Cl2(s)ΔH=−41.2kJ
Entropy
16. Given the reaction at 298 K;
4NH3(g)+5O2(g)→4NO(g)+6H2O(l)
Determine the S
CaCl2(s)→Ca2+(aq)+2Cl−(aq)(7.E.3)
the ΔG°f of CaCl2 (s)= -748.1 kJ/mol,
the ΔH of CaCl2= -795.8 kJ
ΔSo
Ca2+=-53.1 J/Kmol,
CaCl2=104.6 J/Kmol,
Cl-=56.5
Calculate the temperature of this reaction.
18. Assess the feasibility of the reaction below by evaluating ΔSorxn, ΔHorxn, and ΔGorxn
for this reaction at 25°C. If the reaction is spontaneous, is it enthalpically favored,
entropically favored or both?
(NH)4Cl(s)→NH3(g)+HCl(g)
