Robotics Project Proposal

The proposal is for an autonomous payload robot that can carry equipment for workers to reduce fatigue. It will follow workers, avoid obstacles, map terrain with sensors, and track location with GPS. The robot aims to carry up to 5kg while traversing varied terrain using a tank tread system. It will have a user interface to control or receive data from the robot. The goal is to develop a prototype robot within 6 months to demonstrate its abilities.

Robotics Project Proposal// Rough

DRAFT STILL NEEDS WORK LOTS OF

WORK DONE
Executive summary
The problem we are aiming to solve is worker fatigue and inefficiency in the
workplace due to workers having to carry around their equipment and
instruments. Fatigue could lead to possible injuries in the workplace. There
are specific areas where this problem could be found. Scientific research,
Mining operations, Sports, Trades, Civil Engineering, basically where ever
someone needs to carry their equipment with them into remote places or
having to walk vast distances. The technology is a new technology and
would need to have a friendly user interface for humans to work with it.
The demands of modern industry often require workers to transport heavy
equipment and tools over long distances, causing fatigue and reducing
efficiency in the workplace.
Ideally the robot should be robust and powerful enough to carry a payload
of up to 5 kilograms, while having the ability to travel across long distances
without having the need to charge throughout the journey. The robot should
be able to gather data from the different types of terrains and should be
easy to track if it gets lost.

Our Solution to the problem is to build an autonomous payload robot with

the capability to follow humans and being able to navigate on its own with
built in obstacle avoidance and a GPS tracking system.
This payload robot will then follow the workers and carry the needed
equipment for them, we hope this would increase worker efficiency by
reducing worker fatigue. This robot could carry around hazardous
materials, instead of putting workers in a possible dangerous situation.
We plan on having the robot to have the capability to map out contour lines
and output this onto a graph using python. This would make the robot ideal
in a wide range of industries including scientific research, mining,
construction and manufacturing. With this being said it is possible by
eliminating risk factors like fatigue the robot could improve safety in the
workplace.
The Robot will have built in following commands, meaning that the robot
will follow objects or people, so there is no need to control the robot
yourself, but if Remote controlling is necessary, there will be built in feature
where the robot can be controlled with a joystick through the user interface
of a laptop.
With this invention being an all-terrain payload robot, we plan to have the
robot carry up to a 5-kilogram payload while still being able to move across
multiple types of terrain. We plan on doing this by using a tank track
drivetrain. The tank track drive train is the most effective and reliable
drivetrain to be able to explore different types of terrains and climates.

This project will be part of the fourth industrial revolution. Meaning that the
Robot would make use of artificial intelligence and the internet of things.
Which is a step forward from our everyday technology. As the technologies
used in this robot like, obstacle avoidance and terrain mapping could be
used in many more different types of inventions.
The robot’s main goal will be to aid humanity in carrying equipment and
instruments. The final product will be able to gather various types of data
and aid humans with terrain mapping as well. The main outcome would be
the fact that humans won’t have to carry their heavy equipment with them.
Therefore, this robot will have the capability to make many humans’ jobs
safer and easier to do.

Project Background
In many industries workers need to transport heavy equipment, tools and
instruments over long distances to complete their tasks. This may result in
worker fatigue. Worker fatigue reduces efficiency with increased risks of
accidents and injuries.
Many industries involve working in challenging environments such as
scientific research, mining civil engineering and trades. These workers
need to carry their equipment around with them into these challenging
environments. In today’s era the most common solution to these problems
are to use trucks or ATV’s to transport their equipment however these
methods are not always practical or possible, as there are areas where
vehicles could not access.
For example:
In a mining operation,

To address problems like this we are proposing to develop an autonomous

payload robot that can carry equipment for workers. The robot will be
equipped with obstacle avoidance, GPS tracking, contour mapping
technology. The main drive train will be a miniature tank drive train for
maximum traction and power. This would allow the robot to navigate many
different types of terrain while still being capable of traveling long distances
without requiring to be charged frequently. We plan on doing this my using
two 12V lithium batteries.
This proposed project has potential that would bring the 4th industrial
revolution to many new industries. This would increase worker productivity,
worker safety by saving the workers time and energy to focus on the task at
hand.

Our Solution Explained

*vision
*project schedule + milestones
*Team roles + responsibility
*budget
Our vision is to make the lives of workers easier and safer. We would be
eliminating risk factors like fatigue and possible injuries to increase
efficiency and safety in work place.

The main goal of our Project is to build an autonomous payload delivery

robot. The robot will be transporting the workers tools and equipment for
the workers. The robot could be remote controlled through the interface of
a laptop, but the main feature of the robot is that it will follow the human to
where the work needs to be done.
The robot will contain the following features:
 Autonomously following the worker:
This will be done by using a Camera to look at the worker it needs to
follow. We will use reinforcement learning to train the robot in this
aspect.
 Obstacle avoidance:
The robot will try to steer clear of any obstacles that might harm any
humans or damage the robot itself.
 Contour mapping:
Through sensors we could map the layout of everywhere the robot
has travelled. The user could then get this information from the robot
where the robot will output a 3D graph of the different contour lines.
 GPS tracking:
The Robot will have GPS tracking capabilities, this would be done by
using coordinates. With this feature the user could exactly see where
the robot has been following them. This could be used to look onto
google maps to get an arial view of the landscape.
This would also be incase the robot ever gets lost, the user could
track it by using the GPS signals the robot sends out.
 Payload weight:
The robot will be able to carry a payload of up to 5 kilograms, this
would mean that the workers could store their equipment of the robot.
 All terrain trans versing:
The robot will be equipped with a tank track drive train. We choose
this drive train since it has been proven to give the most traction to
vehicles in all types of terrains and climates.
 User Interface with live feed:
The robot will be capable of live streaming it video to the connected
laptop, this could be used to drive the robot remotely.
The user interface will be friendly and easy to work with, we would
like to develop an application that would make it easy for the robot
and the laptop to communicate with each other. This system will give
the user full control of the robot.
