The Accountable Executive

• Direct responsibility for the conduct
of the organization’s affairs
• Final authority over operations

• Ensure that the SMS processes are established,


implemented, and maintained
• Promotes safety awareness and a positive safety culture
• Liaises with the authorities on safety-related issues
• Exchanges valuable lessons learned with other
organizations
• Manages internal incident and accident investigations
• Ensures identified hazards and issues are being managed
• Maintains safety documentation
• Organizes safety training
Coordination of Emergency
Response Planning
• Coordinate your ERP with other organizations
and emergency services, so that you all know
where to go and what to expect if they get the
call

• If you don’t have an ERP, things can get really


ugly, really fast!

• A realistic strategy for the
implementation of an SMS that will
meet the organization’s safety needs
• A definition of the approach the
organization will adopt for managing
safety
• The Implementation Plan can be
simple, but it needs to cover all 12
elements

• Keep it simple!
• Can refer to existing documentation
that covers SMS requirements
• Is a living document that reflects the
structure, processes, and features of
YOUR organization
• Don’t-

operator’s SMS manual!
