In computer networking, a wireless access point, or more generally just access point (AP), is a
networking hardware device that allows other Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network.

A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnetworks. It serves two
primary functions: managing traffic between these networks by forwarding data packets to their

intended IP addresses and allowing multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.

A network switch is networking hardware that connects devices on a computer network by using packet
switching to receive and forward data to the destination device.

Workstations are computers that are specifically configured to meet the most demanding technical
computing requirements.

A network printer is any printer connected to a network, whether through Ethernet or Wi-Fi - the latter
being the more contemporary option. Whereas a local printer would be cabled straight to the device
that requires it, a network printer can be accessed by multiple devices simultaneously on the same
network.
A cloud network is a Wide Area Network (WAN) that hosts users and resources and allows the two to
communicate via cloud-based technologies. It consists of virtual routers, firewalls, and network
management software.

An Ethernet hub, active hub, network hub, repeater hub, multiport repeater, or simply hub is a network
hardware device for connecting multiple Ethernet devices together and making them act as a single
network segment.

A web server stores and delivers files to browsers, making your site accessible to users. It also processes
files for emails and data storage using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and File Transfer Protocol
(FTP).

A file server is a computer responsible for the storage and management of data files so that other
computers on the same network can access the files. It enables users to share information over a
network without having to physically transfer files.
A mail server -- also known as a mail transfer agent, or MTA; mail transport agent; mail router; or
internet mailer -- is an application that receives incoming email from local users and remote senders and
forwards outgoing messages for delivery.

Application servers are network computers that store and run an application for client computers.
Application servers, whatever their function, occupy a large chunk of computing territory between
database servers and the end user.

A Mobile Web Server is software designed for modern-day smartphones to host personal web servers,
through the use of open sourced software, such as, i-jetty, an open source software, based on jetty.

A media server is a dedicated server running applications that store and share multimedia files (text,
graphics, video, audio…etc.) on demand. A media server can be any device having network access with
suitable bandwidth for the sharing and saving of media. A server, PC, network-attached storage (NAS) or
any other device with such storage capability can be used as a media server.
Directory Server provides a central repository for storing and managing information. Almost any kind of
information can be stored, from identity profiles and access privileges to information about application
and network resources, printers, network devices and manufactured parts.

A terminal server, also known as a communication server, is a hardware device or server that provides
terminals -- such as PCs, printers, and other devices -- with a common connection point to a local or wide

area network (WAN).

In UNIX systems, a super server is a daemon used to manage other servers. A daemon is a program that
runs in the background and performs similar tasks to Windows services. A super server is usually
programmed to start other servers as needed.

Secure servers are those servers that use the secure sockets layer protocol to protect communication
from unintended recipients. More commonly referred to as SSL servers, secure servers will communicate
between other Web servers and Web browsers using cryptography or encrypted and decrypted
communication.
Content server, a computer that stores content for the Internet. Content (news, sports, references, etc.)
is differentiated from transaction data such as customer records and orders.

A database server is any server that runs a network database application and maintains database files,
such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle. SQL Server is a high-performance database management system.

Server certificates (SSL certificates) are used to authenticate the identity of a server. When installed on a
website, an SSL certificate turns the protocol on the website from HTTP to HTTPS [Difference b/w HTTP
and https] and installs indicators that vouch for the authenticity of the website.

A print server is a dedicated appliance or central point of software. They help clients/users/devices
connect to shared printers and they process or pass through spool files from a client to the printer.

A communications server is a server or another hardware device (e.g., router) that allows multiple
computers to access communications lines that are connected to the device. For example, sharing a
broadband Internet connection.
An eCommerce server is a server designed exclusively for hosting an online store that can sell products
or services to clients. This could be a small site to sell products to a local community, all the way up to a
cluster of thousands of servers that could host a site like Amazon.

File transfer protocol server (commonly known as FTP Server) is computer software that facilitates the
secure exchange of files over a TCP/IP network. It runs the file transfer protocol (FTP), a standard
communication protocol that operates at the network level, to establish a secure connection between
the devices in a client-server architecture and efficiently transmit data over the internet.

A proxy server firewall caches, filters, logs, and controls requests from devices to keep networks secure

and prevent access to unauthorized parties and cyberattacks.

A data center is a physical facility that organizations use to house their critical applications and data. A
data center's design is based on a network of computing and storage resources that enable the delivery
of shared applications and data.

Network software is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of software that streamlines the
operations, design, monitoring, and implementation of computer networks.
Archiving is the process of long-term storage of important data for security and recovery reasons.
Archived data is usually stored in a compressed format because it is required infrequently.

A network database is a database model where numerous records or files can link to multiple owner
files and vice versa. The model can be represented by an upside-down tree, where every member's
information (branch) attaches to the bottom of the tree (owner).

The World Wide Web (WWW), commonly known as the Web, is an information system that enables
information sharing over the Internet through user-friendly ways meant to appeal to users beyond IT
specialists and hobbyists. It allows documents and other web resources to be accessed over the Internet
according to specific rules of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and decides
whether to allow or block specific traffic based on a defined set of security rules.

A bridge in a computer network is a device used to connect multiple LANs together with a larger Local
Area Network (LAN). The mechanism of network aggregation is known as bridging. The bridge is a
physical or hardware device but operates at the OSI model's data link layer and is also known as a layer
of two switches.
Port selectors are devices that are attached to a network that prompts for the name of a calling modem,
then grant access. The file /etc/uucp/Dialers contains caller scripts only for the micom and develcon port
selectors. You can add your own port selector entries to the Dialers file.

A concentrator is a device that provides a central connection point for cables from workstations, servers,
and peripherals. In a star topology, twisted-pair wire is run from each workstation to a central

concentrator.

MAU is a wiring concentrator or passive hub used in Token Ring networks. Multistation Access Units
(MAUs), which are the core wiring components for building Token Ring local area networks (LANs), direct
network traffic from one station to the next.
