Volunteer in Nursing Home Final
Hi. I am Anna, I’m 16 years old and I live in Liverpool UK. Recently, I decided that I wanted to
volunteer and contribute something to my local community. I decided to spend my Saturday
mornings volunteering at a local nursing home. I want to be a nurse so this seemed a great
choice. But what does it entail? Read on to find out about my experiences.
First of all. What is a nursing home? I was shown around the building and this is what I saw. It is
different from a hospital and is a place where the elderly, disabled people, and those who need
special healthcare stay. These people do not need to be in hospital but they need more care than
the family can provide adequately at home. The nursing home can have long term or short-term
residents. There are qualified nurses and also unqualified nursing aides as staff.
Then, I was interviewed. The nurse who interviewed me said that the ideal volunteer for this role
should be a friendly, outgoing and patient person. I passed the interview and was given training
to make sure that I could carry out my duties properly. I was told that I didn’t need special skills
but I would be involved in simple tasks like reading to the residents, chatting or playing board
games. Some volunteers can bring special skills to the nursing homes such as cutting hair or
entertaining the residents with musical performances. I was even be taught how to drive a
wheelchair!
After I was given my uniform and a name badge, I was allowed to begin. My nursing home has
around twenty long term elderly patients. When I arrive, we have a staff meeting to find out on
what has happened the night before, if there are any problems that we should be aware of and
then the volunteer leader gives me my duties for the morning. I am usually there from 10am until
2pm, but I volunteer for full days in my holidays.
I start by helping the less able residents dress. I have four women that I help each week so I get
to know them and build up a relationship with them. Then it is time to serve breakfast to the
residents in their rooms and I try to sit with one of them while they eat to give them some
company. I then either take a couple of residents for a walk around the garden or wheel them if
they are immobile. If the weather is bad, I will play Monopoly or Scrabble…I always lose…or I
sit with a group and we watch TV together. At coffee time I organize the music for the residents
to listen to and we sometime sing along! If they need help with technology such as sending
emails, I also do that for them. In the holidays, I will be with the staff that take the residents to
days out such as to the seaside or the cinema. No day is the same and I really like the variety it
offers.
I feel that are benefits for everybody when I volunteer. For the residents, there is the increased
interaction which helps lessen their feelings of loneliness. Studies have shown that when the
elderly interact with young volunteers this increases their cognition levels. For the nursing staff,
volunteers spending time with the residents means that they have more time to focus on
providing higher quality nursing care and this decreases their stress levels. The families do not
need to visit so often as they know their elderly relatives have company.
It has been a great experience for me. I have had the chance to get career advice from senior staff
which will really help me in the future. It is also a useful activity to add to my nursing college
resume. Finally, the biggest bonus of my volunteering has been collecting lots of extra
grandparents! I love hearing their stories about the old days in my city.
You and your community could really benefit if you volunteer like me. I recommend this activity
for everyone. Contact your local nursing home and see what you can do!
