REFLECTION #4

ELJEAN S. LACLAC

The concepts and approaches in studying grammar brought me

back to my main obligation as a teacher which is to impart positive
learning and positive changes to the lives of my students. The
reporters have successfully and effectively remind and raise
awareness to the teachers on their approaches and strategies in
inculcating language learning to the students.
They also emphasized how grammar greatly affects the meaning or
message a speaker wants to convey. Though we can say, especially
with a non-native English speaker’s perspective that the content is
much more important that the structure, still in most cases these
content are being formed and structured by grammar. Hence, the
effectiveness of the messages also rely on the appropriate structure
of the statements.
We were also reminded of the two language teaching approaches;
Prescriptivists and Descriptivist Approach.
As a teacher, I adhere to the principle of “Teach students on the
way they learn, not on the way you teach”, means if a certain
approach is more suitable or appropriate on these specific learners
then you have to apply it, unless otherwise.
The root here is that, in teaching grammar or English language, we,
teachers also need to know and identify what kind of learners we
are dealing with to ensure the existence of learning.
