1)The British were not content with being mere traders in India. They wanted to control the
land.
2. The Mughal empire in India started declining around 250 years ago. As a result,
many regional kingdoms started to emerge.
3. Since there was constant fighting among these regional kingdoms, the British
took advantage of this and steadily started gaining control over India.
4. The British decided that the best way to secure the Company’s interests in
Bengal was to replace Siraj-ud-daula with a new nawab who would benefit the
British.
5. The young Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-daula, had fought for Calcutta from the
East India Company with a huge army on 23 June 1757. The British defeated
him in the battle.
6. After their victory, the British became very powerful in Bengal and later
extended their control over most of India in the next 100 years. This marked a
turning point in Indian history.( Any 3 points)
