Preliminaries

in Swimming
Objectives: At the end of this lesson, the learners should be
able to:
1. Illustrate correct entry and exit to the pool.
2. Demonstrate blowing bubbles into the water.
3. Know how to move safely in the pool.
4. Establish confidence in the water by doing the given
activities.
Swimming involves entering natural or man-made water bodies.
Skilled swimmers enjoy sliding, jumping, or diving as basic
steps for their preferred swimming styles.
these are the basic steps in swimming:
1. Proper entry into and exist out of the water; and
2. Blowing bubbles
Learn steps to overcome water fear, gain
confidence, and relax in movement for a prepared
mind and body. Safety measures are emphasized.
In swimming, know pool depth, stick to
comfortable areas if not confident yet.
Entry Into and Exit Out of the Water

For beginners, the first thing to learn in

swimming is how to enter into and exit out of
the water. In a swimming pool, there are
proper ways to do these, specifically those
with and without a ladder.
Pool with a Ladder
Entry
1. Face the ladder and go down slowly while holding the rail with
relaxed grip.
2. Watch your feet while entering into the water to make sure that you
will not miss any step to keep you from slipping.
3. Check the depth of the pool by reaching the floor with your feet.
4. If the water levei is within your shoulder, you are safe to move
around.
5. If you are not comfortable with the water level, you may perform
the correct exit.
Exit
1. Hold on to the rails while climbing the ladder slowly.
Pool without a Ladder
Entry
1. Sit at the edge of the pool.
2. Place both of your hands firmly on the right or left side of your body
(wherever is comfortable).
3. Slowly go down into the water by turning your body facing the wall
while your hands are still on the edge.
4. Check the depth of the pool by reaching the floor using your feet.
5. If the water level is within your shoulder, you are safe to move around.
6. If you are not comfortable with the water level, you may perform the
correct exit.
Exit
1. While the hands are on the edge of the pool, place some weight
on your arms and bend your elbows to lift your body up.
2. Lift your body by elevating it to a 90 degree slanting position. Your
stomach should be near the edge.
3. Once your body is up, turn to your right then sit on the edge.
It is important to be comfortable in the water before moving away
from the edge of the pool. To be comfortable in the water, you may
do the following activities:
1. While still facing the wall, place your right hand down to your right
leg and turn to your right and walk slowly while your left hand is still
holding the edge of the pool.
2. Cup water in your hands and throw over your own head and
shoulders.
3. Make splashes of water.
Safety Measures in Swimming

Safe swimming involves more than proper entry/exit, consider
precautions to avoid incidents in and around water, especially
pools. Don't swim immediately after a meal; wait an hour. Always
swim with a companion, even if you're a strong swimmer.
Safety Measures in Swimming Pool

1. Perform the correct entry and exit of the water.
2. Don't run around the pool edge; you could slip over or fall in.
3. In case you accidently slipped or fall in to the pool, protect your head
by covering it with your hands.
4. If you jump in, check first if there are no swimmers around and make
sure the depth is manageable.
5. It is dangerous to push anyone into the water. You could end up
hitting person already in it.
6. Be conscious of other swimmers when in a public pool. You can
easily collide with other swimmers if you don't look where you are going.
Safety in Rivers or Beaches

Natural water bodies like rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans provide a challenging swimming
experience due to currents. Be cautious and watch for potential hazards when swimming
in these environments.
1. Check whether the tide is going out or coming in.
2. Rivers often have dangerous currents and river banks can be steep and slippery.
3. Swim parallel to the shore. If you swim out to the sea, you may get too tired to swim
back.
4. Don't swim near piers or breakwaters. Currents and waves around them can be too
strong even for very good swimmers.
5. Note where life vests or other emergency aids are kept.
6. If you have doubts about whether it is safe or not, don't swim.
Breathe Control Through Blowing Bubbles

Proper water entry precedes the crucial step of blowing bubbles in
swimming. This skill focuses on breath control to prevent panic.
Beginners often hold their breath underwater, causing tension.
Blowing bubbles helps relax and release tension, promoting regular
breathing. It prevents the inadvertent swallowing of water,
emphasizing controlled exhalation through the nose to enhance
breath control.
Steps in Blowing Bubbles
1. Get some air by inhaling through the mouth while your face is
above the water.
2. Close your mouth while submerging your head slowly into the
water.
3. When your face is under water, exhale through your nose.
