REPORT WRITING
A report is a factual description of an event, incident happened, programme conducted
It is a systematic and well-organized presentation of facts and findings. A report is
written for a clear purpose and for a particular audience.
POINTS TO REMEMBER
• Use past tense / past passive tense to write about events and happenings.
• Be brief and to the point.
• Write short and simple sentences.
• Report an event in the order in which things happened.
• Stick on to the word limit.
• Use formal language
• Avoid jargons or unnecessary or imaginary things.
• Must use uniform verb tense, preferably past tense.

FORMAT OF REPORT WRITING


1) Heading / Title
2) By : Name of the Reporter
3) Place, ……..Date……..
4) Content (in 4 Paragraphs)
I Para – Introductory Para:
✓ A brief mention of what happened,
✓ Where, how and the most prominent consequence/effect along with the day,
✓ Date and time when it took place.
II Para & III Para – Series of events
✓ Participants, preparation of the event, welcome of guests
✓ Main features, Main steps, Main attractions
✓ Eye witness account
✓ In case of accidents, loss of life and property is listed, cause of the accident is
concluded, police action and rescue operation, damage control exercise are
detailed. Compensation and help announced by government is mentioned.
Last Para – Conclusion
✓ Main points from chief guest’s speech
✓ Announcement (scholarship/ex-gratia
✓ Future course of events (Investigation/ high level enquiry /SIT has been set up etc.)
in case of accident/Fire/disaster (tragic incidents)
EXAMPLE OF REPORT WRITING:
Q.1. You are Ashwini/Aarti. The Women Empowerment Organisation
(WEO) in collaboration with Child and Women Care Society (CWCS),
celebrated The Women Empowerment Day recently in Community
centre, Pocket B, Rohini. As the city correspondent, write a report in
120-150 words for the city magazine, The Today.

Women’s Empowerment Day Observed

New Delhi, July 26: The Women Empowerment Organisation (WEO) in


association with Child and Women Care Society (CWCS), both NGOs,
observed the Women Empowerment Day at Community center, Pocket B,
Rohini today. The main purpose was to create awareness about women’s
rights and to empower women.

As many as fifty members of the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) formed by WEO


and CWCS in the area participated in the programme. The programme
began with a welcome dance by the renowned dancer, Shobha Advait and
was followed by a talk by WEO members.

Ms. Aradhna Srivastava, District Magistrate, Rohini, stressed upon the


importance of education for girls. She also gave details about the Sarv
Shiksha Abhiyaan (Education for All), an initiative by the Government
under which students are given books free of cost. Ms. Radhika, the
Director of WEO gave a speech detailing the various free classes organized
by the society to teach young girls painting and soft toy making, which
could be developed for self-employment. She also made the audience
aware about the need for women safety and the various free defense
classes organized by the organization.

Dr. Aniket, State Coordinator, CWCS, made the gathering aware of the
importance of observing Women’s Day and informed the women about
various governmental schemes to help and empower them. Later, a play
named “Narishakti” was staged. The participants expressed their gratitude
to the organizers as they were now better informed.

Q.2 You are Derry/Edla, a resident of Delhi. Last week while travelling to
Seemapuri you witnessed a train accident. Write a report in about 120-
150 words.

A fatal train accident took place on 10th July at 8 a.m. near Seemapuri
Colony crossing. The Rajdhani Express coming from Patna collided with a
goods train coming from Rohtak. The Rajdhani Express got derailed.

There were six hundred people in the Rajdhani Express. Six people died on
the spot including two women. Forty people got injured including ten
children. Many people got trapped in bogies of the train. Local people took
the injured to nearby hospital.
According to the doctors, the condition of five persons was critical. There
was chaos at the accident site. Luggage was lying scattered all around.
People were looking for their dear ones. The rescue team arrived after one
hour. They rescued the people trapped in the bogies.
All Injured were shifted to the nearby hospital. People with minor injuries
were discharges after first aid. The DM expressed his grief. The CM
announced compensation of Rs 200.000 for those who were killed and Rs
25,000 for those who suffered injuries. A high-level enquiry committee has
been set up.
