1. Determination of weight of an Object usingPrinciple of moments
Aim: To Detenine the Weight of an object by using the Principle of moments.
Apparatus Required: Metre Scale, Thread, Knife edge, Weights.
Formula:
Unknown weight W| =(W2 xd2) / di kg
Known weight -W2, unknown weight-W1 kg wt
Distance of an unknown weight from knife edge-dlm
Distance of a known weight from knife edge - d2m
Procedure:
Ametre scale is supported at its centre of gravity by a knife edge
Known weight (W2) and an unknown weight (W)) are suspended on either side of the scale.
3. Fix the position of the known weight (W2) adjust the position of the
unknown weight(W) until the scale is in equilibrium.
4. Measure the distances d1 & d2.
O. Kepeat the experiment by changing the position of an unknown weight Wl, and tabulate the values of d1
& d2.

Observation:
S.No Known Distance of Distance of W2 X d2 Unknown Weight
weight (W2) known Weight unknown (kgm) W1 = (W2 x d2) /
kg d2 (m) Weight d1 (m) d1 (kgwe)
1 0.5 0.5 0.25 0.25 1
2 0.5 0.4 0.2 0.2 1

Average 1 kgWt
Principle: Clockwise moment (W2 x d2) =Anti clockwise moment (Wlx d1)
Calculation:
Unknown weight W1 =(W2 x d2) / dl kg
d2
WI=W2 x
d1

W1 =(0.5 x 0.5) / 0.25

=0.25 /0.25 = 1kg.

Result : Weight of an unknown Object W] = 1kgWt.

2. Determination of Focal length of a Convex Lens
Aim: To find the Focal length of aConvex Lens by i) distant object method ii) uv method.
Apparatus Required:AConvex Lens, Stand, Wire gauze object, screcn & measuring Scale
Formula :.
Focal length of aConvex Lens f = Ccm)
u-Object distance (cm)
V-image distance (cm)
Procedure:
Distant Object method :

hens

Fix the given Convex lens on the lens stand towards the
distant object.
Adjust the distance between the lens and the screen to get the
sharp diminished and inverted image.
Measure the distance between lens and the screen. This is the focal
u-V method: length of the given Convex Lens.

Fix the given convex lens on the stand and

place the object at the distance. (u<2f, u = 2f, u>
Adjust the screen to get a sharp, Diminished and 2).
inverted image.
" Repeat the experiment, by
changing the distance of an object (u) and tabulate the
Obsevation : values of u and v.

Calculation :

Result: Focal length of the given convex lens,
1: By Distant Object method f 10cm
2. By u-v method f= 10.03cm.
3. Determination of Resistivity
Aim :To determine the resistivity of the material of the given coil of wire.
Apparatus Required :Acoil of wire, Screw gauge, Metre Scale, Ammeter, Voltmeter, Rheostat,
Battery,Connecting wiresand Key
Formula: (Formula + Circuit diagram-1Mark)
The Resistivity of the material of the Coilof wire is
p-)R (inohm metre)
Where, A - area of cross section of the coil of wire (m).
L-length of the coil of wire (m)
R- Resistance of the coil of wire (2)
Procedure:
Connect the Circuit as shown in the circuit diagrarm.
Close the circuit by key and measure the Voltmeter reading for various ammeter
Readings.
3.Measure the length of the given coil of wire.
4. Find the Diameter of the given coil of wire by using Screw gauge.
Observations:
To find the Resistance of the Coil:
S.No Ammeter Readings I(A) Voltmeter Readings V(V) Resistance R= 2
1 0.4 1.6 4
2 0.6 2.4 4
Mean 4Q
Tofind the Diameter of the given coil of wire by using screw
gauge:
Least Count (LC) = 0.01mm Zero ErTOr =0
S.No Pitch Scale Head Scale Head Scale Total Reading = PSR
Reading (PSR) Coincidence (HSC) Reading (HSR) = + HSR mm
Imm HSCx LC mm
1 40 0.4 0.4
2 40 0.4 0.4
Mean 0.4 mm
Calculation:
1.:Radius ófthe coil of wire r =Diameter/2=0,4/2 =0.2mm = 2x10*m
2. A=r m
3. L= Im =3.14x(2x10'=1.25x10 m

p=R(in ohm metre) =(1.25x1o'/1)x4 = 5x 10"Sm

Result: Resistivity of the given Coil = 5x10"m
