WHAT IS AN ASPIRATION SMOKE DETECTOR (ASD)?

• An equipment extracting air via several inlets (sampling holes) of a pipe system (aspiration
pipe) and evaluating this air with the help of a smoke sensor (detection unit) installed in a
convenient location.

Air circulation from the floor to the ceiling

MAIN FEATURES OF AN ASD

• Very early smoke detection

• More time for evacuation, due to the quick warning

• Broad spectrum of environmental conditions

• Concealed installation possible

• Less maintenance needs / costs

• Alternative to automatic extinguishing installations, due to the very quick and early warning

Early warning in safe conditions

ASD APPLICATIONS

Optimal solution when the standard detection technology reaches its limits

• Difficult access and installation locations

• Harsh environmental conditions
• High sensitivity requirements
• Vandalism
• Aesthetics

MAINTENANCE IN SPACES WITH LIMITED

ACCESS POSSIBILITIES

The installation location of an ASD unit can be chosen. The pipe system has minimal
maintenance requirements; thus monitoring is possible in spaces with limited access, e.g.:

• Shopping malls

• Production facilities

• Jails

• High security areas

PIPE ENDING: END CAP/HOLE

Open end
• Lower transport time, but poor system calibration
• Most of the aspired air comes from the pipe open end
• Strong influence on the sensitivity of the further sampling holes

Closed end
• Higher transport time, but good system calibration
• Higher airflow is taken through the sampling holes; therefore, higher sensitivity of the
sampling holes

Sometimes much better then

CUMULATIVE EFFECT: DIFFERENT THAN
point detectors...

POINT DETECTORS
This is not an issue at all that the smoke is diluted!!!
Higher density to detector

ASD

• Dilution in the space but concentration in the pipe...

• So called cumulative (or collective) effect.

HOLE SENSITIVITY: SMALL FIRE = DILUTION

Lower density to detector

Clean air Smoke in high density

Hole sensitivity is defined when

ASD
smoke reaches ONE hole only.
All other holes take clean air.

• Hole sensitivity ≠ detector sensitivity ☺

• Concentration in the space but dilution in the pipe...
• More holes → lower hole sensitivity → later detection...

25

LEGISLATION
EN54-20
In 2009, the EU produced an EN standard for ASD’s – EN 54-20
This falls under the legislation of the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) since July 2013
EN 54-20 ASDs must have legislative CE approval

Industry impact
Before EN 54-20
Only 1 sensitivity class of ASD (Class C = to point detector)
Class C sensitivity determined by same test fires as point detectors
Issue of needing to provide greater sensitivity for critical applications

Now
EN 54-20 standard has introduced 2 new sensitivity classes determined by EoT new test
fires (reduced fuel & increased smoke dilution) Class A & B

LEGISLATION
EN54-20 important changes

Only covers detector class, software and accessories (filters & pipework)
Does not determine the class of ASD to be used
Design application has to be considered when selecting class of ASD

National Fire Codes

Most of the national Codes incorporate now requirements for ASD design, install and
commissioning in compliance with EN 54-20, according to their sensitivity class
Scope: any life safety fire system must be appropriate for the building and provide the duty of care
required to provide life safety for all occupants and also security for the values stored in the
building

POSITIONING PIPES AND SAMPLING HOLES

The various international codes and standards specify detection point spacing or maximum area
of coverage per detection point for a variety of different airflow rates, ceiling heights and structures
etc. These prescriptions must be respected having in view the detection and application types.
EN 54-20 classes for ASD’s:
Class Description Sample Applications Requirement
A Aspiration smoke Very early detection: Fulfils the requirements of the
detector with very Detection of very dilute smoke, such as might enter into air- test fires TF2A, TF3A, TF4 and
high sensitivity conditioning ducts, for verification of extremely dilute TF5A
concentrations of smoke that can be emitted into the
monitored area, such as a clean room, by the equipment
located there.
B Aspiration smoke Early detection: Fulfils the requirements of the
detector with high For example, fire detection within or in the vicinity of test fires TF2B, TF3B, TF4 and
sensitivity particularly valuable, susceptible or critical equipment, such TF5B
as computers or electrical equipment cabinets
C Aspiration smoke Normal detection: Fulfils the requirements of the
detector with General fire detection in typical rooms or room areas with test fires TF2, TF3, TF4 and
typical sensitivity response behaviour that is at least equivalent to a point-type TF5
or line-type detector, for example

PIPE MATERIAL
The pipe material must be chosen according to the installation environment. For example, the pipe
segments installed in cold storage areas must withstand low temperatures, but also temperature
variations. Below are presented a few usual pipe materials and their relevant features:

Material Operating temperature range Linear Thermal

Contraction/Expansion
PVC -18°C to 49°C 7.0 mm / 10 m / 10°C
HFT -40°C to 140°C 7.0 mm / 10 / 10°C
ABS -40°C to 80°C 10.1 mm / 10 m / 10°C
CPVC -18°C to 94°C 6.7 mm / 10 m / 10°C
PE-80 -50°C to 60°C 20 mm / 10 m / 10°C
PE-100 -50°C to 60°C 13 mm / 10 m / 10°C
Copper -150°C to 110°C 1.7 mm / 10 m / 10°C
Steel -150°C to 110°C 1.1 mm / 10 m / 10°C

LENGTH VARIATIONS - COMPENSATION

For installations where temperature variations are expected, pipe length variations must be
considered. The mounting systems must allow a certain movement allowance, where possible.
In other cases, flexible junction segments must be used.

Saddle Clip Offset Clip Pipe Clip (leave allowance

for pipe contraction)

Relative distances between mounting elements must be defined depending on the material.
Recommended values: 1.2 m (ABS, PE), 1.4 m (PVC, CPVC), 1.5 m (copper, steel).

Specific risks:
• Occupied shelves may determine delayed smoke propagation to
the room detectors (spot or beams). In most of the cases, spot
detectors are not to be used.

Solutions:
• ASD’s (for racks)
• ASD’s or beam smoke detectors for the areas which are not
occupied by storage racks
