The Effectiveness of Musa Paradisiaca (Banana peel) as Floor Wax

RESEARCH ABSTRACT

The most well-known floor waxes have harmful negative effects on one's health. It also has a harmful

stench that most people find irritating. According to studies, persistent inhalation of the odor of cleaning agents,

particularly floor wax, has negative respiratory consequences. The goal of this research is to develop an alternative floor

wax that removes the bad respiratory side effects that may be obtained from some of the commonly used floor waxes,

while having a fine polishing performance. The researcher come up with banana peel due to its natural slipperiness. The

researchers obtained the data using comparison of banana peel floor wax and the commercial floor wax and with the

utilization of Likert scale. The purpose of the researcher's experiment was to get findings that could be used to compare

odor, friction, and gloss. The smell of the banana peel floor wax was not as intense as the odor of the commercial floor

wax. The friction shine of the banana peel floor wax is also higher than that of the commercial floor wax. It indicates that

banana peel with Carnauba wax is comparable to commercial floor wax and can be a viable option in terms of cost,

advantages, acceptance, and efficacy. The researchers advise using an alternate stabilizer to extend the shelf life of floor

wax.

The Effectiveness of Musa paradisiaca (Banana) peel as Floor Wax

Chapter I: Background of the Study

Introduction

Floor wax is considered as one of the most used cleaning agents in a household, school, office and facilities. It

is used to polish, shine, and make the floor looked glossier, but due to the chemicals mixed into it, Floor wax can be

dangerous, it contains formaldehyde and hazardous chemicals like nitrobenzene, perchloroethylene, phenol, toluene,

xylene and cresol, which can cause liver, kidney damaged, and some respiratory diseases when inhaled too much. It can

also damage our skin and can cause allergic reactions which can result in a more serious problem. Even though floor wax

was suited for practically any of floor and had been popular for a long time, many businesses and experts in the flooring

sector were questioning the harsh chemicals, it contains and the repercussions that it might have in the long run for

everyone in an eco-friendly floor wax. The most popular floor wax in the Philippines was Brand X, which was produced

by the top brand. Given that it was readily available on the market, it was the one that is frequently utilized in homes.

Children's health was impacted by its components and combustible mixture; hence it was forbidden to be exposed in open

flames and extreme heat, The researchers would compare floor wax manufactured from banana peels to Brand X. In

exchange of the harmful substance that the current commercial floor wax has the researchers will be using carnauba

substance as an alternative ingredient. Carnauba wax, also called Cearra wax, a vegetable wax obtained from carnauba

tree. Even though many goods people use today include carnauba wax, many people are unaware of its existence.

Carnauba wax was a very important invention. natural substances and sustainable resources don't possess a synthetic

substitute. Carnauba is used mostly to shine objects and it also has lower melting point than other waxes have and it was

also very hard that’s why it was referred to as the “Queen of Waxes”. (Alcaraz.et al,2019)
The Effectiveness of Musa Paradisiaca (Banana peel) as Floor Wax

The Banana, Musa paradisiaca peel, is an agricultural biomass waste that has the potential to be used as

an alternative to commercial floor wax. Philippine is one of the biggest producers of banana that supplies the other

country and considered as the sixth leading exporter of bananas in the world.

Bananas are the second most popular tropical fruit consumed globally, accounting for approximately 119.83 million tons

produced globally, accounting for 16% of total fruit production. However, with increased consumption comes increased

waste. The peel accounts for 30% to 40% of the waste produced by banana consumption, resulting in approximately 3.5

million tons of banana peel waste per year. Banana peel waste contains carbon-rich organic compounds that can take up to

two years to decompose and biodegrade, producing odor and excessive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute

to climate change. (Ewing-Chow,2022)

Banana peels contain potassium, a chemical element, that can be applied to leather, wood,

and metals that makes a natural polishing agent. Because of its high potassium content, the banana peel is also recognized

for its slickness. According to a recent experiment done by certain researchers, the slipperiness of banana peel applied on

wood has a coefficient of friction of only 0.07, making it twice as slippery as ice. (Alcaraz et al. 2019). With this idea, the

researchers saw the potential of banana peel and came up with the idea of making it as an alternative floor wax.

Also, according to some studies, banana peel is a rich source of phenolic compound with total content up to 30

mg/g dried matter (Singh et al. 2016). Phenol is considered as one of the main components of floor wax which makes the

banana an interesting choice for the researcher.

Researcher Paradigm

The conceptual framework of this study was shown in figure 1, wherein the potassium extracted from the

banana peelings are the independent variable of this study and its effects and performance as an alternative floor wax is

the dependent variable.
