GABU NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MATH GROUP PROJECT PROPOSAL

NAME OF PROJECT Project SIR-MATH-A (Strategic Integration of Real-

world Math Activities for Thriving Hands-on
Applications)

BACKGROUND AND
RATIONALE Young people today are habituated to visual culture as
a result of easy access to social media platforms
such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. There are
many other types of media involved, such as text,
music, graphics, animation, video, and virtual reality.

Furthermore, the development and quick growth of the

Internet, together with its increasing public
accessibility, has opened up a whole new digital
universe. As a result, during the learning process,
learners are more likely to accept the knowledge
presented to them in this manner. Learners are
discouraged to learn the subject when it is not
presented in a modern and accessible manner,
particularly in mathematics, where a number of issues
require a great deal of imagination.

According to Hohenwarter (2007), the main obstacles

in teaching mathematics are: concepts that lack
adequate illustration; mathematical graphs that are
static in the traditional method of teaching
mathematics, i.e. drawing it on a piece of paper; and
static objects that do not allow for concept
generalization. Furthermore, the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the world's biggest
association of mathematics teachers, identified
technology as one of their six school mathematics
principles in 2000. The council also agreed that
technology is important in teaching and studying
mathematics since it changes what is taught and
improves students' learning. Today's mathematics
education guidelines emphasize the importance of
visualization tools. As a result of these requirements,
various software applications for several math skills
such as, but not limited to, building geometric
structures and solving analytical and algebraic
problems were developed.

Deped is committed to improving the quality of

education by integrating ICT in classroom
instruction. Thus, the major role of the EdTech Unit
is to focus on the components of ICT-Assisted
Teaching and Learning. One of the goals and objectives
mentioned is to bridge the digital divide in terms of
access to quality education by providing ICT Platforms
to support and augment the requirements of all types
of learning environments.

Pursuant to the DepEd Order No. 013, s. 2023 which

is about the Adoption of the National Learning
Recovery Program (NLRP), anchored on the
MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang
Makabansa agenda, DepEd adopts the NLRP to: (1)
strengthen the learning recovery and continuity
program of the Department; (2) improve numeracy and
literacy, and (3) accelerate the achievement of the
education targets. Furthermore, this shall primarily
address the learning gaps through the concerted effort
of DepEd, through the Curriculum and Teaching
Strand, and all its offices, in collaboration with
stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

In the First Quarter of S.Y. 2023 - 2024, learners of

Gabu National High School showed a Mean
Percentage Score of 35 - 40% across all grade levels
in terms of the mastery of the prescribed Most
Essential Learning Competencies. With these figures,
teachers have felt that there is a lot of work to be done
in improving learners’ competency in mathematics
education.

Thus, the mathematics faculty is proposing this

project titled, Project SIR-MATH-A: Strategic
Integration of Real-world Math Activities for Thriving
Hands-on Applications. The said project attempts to
improve the learner’s competency in mathematics by
providing learners appropriate hands-on
applications such as but not limited to Geogebra,
Desmos, Prodigy, and even the statistical functions
available in Microsoft Excel.

Learner's mean percentage score for the fourth quarter

examination shall serve as a performance indicator in
assessing the success of the project. Moreover, such
reports (i.e. Accomplishment and Narrative Reports)
shall be made for documentation purposes.
OBJECTIVES At the end of the 4th quarter of this School Year 2023-
2024, the 459 JHS learners and 228 SHS learners will
be able to:

1. perform basic functions of several hands-on

application/s used inside the class;

2. solve real-world problems using hands-on

applications; and

3. appreciate the use of hands-on applications through

a simple classroom culminating activity (presentation
and discussion of outputs and/or quantitative data).
