SLRM in Udupi
Udupi, also known as Odipu, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is
the administrative headquarters of Udupi District. It is one of the fastest
growing cities in Karnataka and has various educational institutions. Udupi
is one of the top tourist attractions in Karnataka. It is notable for
the Krishna Temple. It lends its name to the popular Udupi cuisine
Udupi is also one of the first District who has started and is successfully
running Solid Liquid Resource Management units .It is a district which is
able to manage waste and convert it to resource and make profit from it.
About 50 gram panchayats in Udupi district of Karnataka have a solid and
Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre, each equipped with a specially
designed tricycle/vehicle that the local Self Help Group, uses for collection
of household waste. The system works like clockwork, contributing to
making the villages look clean and beautiful.
7
SLRM is a method by which garbage is converted into a source of income,
while creating a lot of employment opportunities. Waste collected from the
households is brought to the centre for processing in a scientific manner.
The project is a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) ODF
(open defecation free) plus activities.
Across the district, Green protocol by which use of single use plastic and
disposables is minimised is encouraged at all public meetings, ceremonies,
schools, anganwadis, government offices, etc.
Our volunteers were taken to visit these SLRM units and were educated
about waste segregation, management and disposal. The volunteers in turn
educated the villagers about how important waste management is, how
important SLRM unit is and how to segregate, manage and dispose waste
effectively. They also educated people on Ban on Plastic and the harm from
plastic usage to mankind.

1. Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Programme
Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is an essential aspect of
hygiene for women and adolescent girls between menarche and
menopause. Despite being an important issue concerning women and
girls in the menstruating age group MHM is often overlooked in post-
disaster responses. Further, there is limited evidence of menstrual
hygiene management in humanitarian settings. We at Avisa aim to
educate women about clean and proper menstrual hygiene.
Women of Udupi and Mysuru District were given awareness about
menstrual health and hygiene, as it is proven that 62 percent of rural
women use unhygienic methods during menstruation, 47 sessions
were given to the women of all the panchayaths. This program falls
under Manasvini project of Avisa.

2. Street Play
Nowadays, street play is used to convey a message to the crowd
watching it. Street play is considered to be the rawest form of acting,
because one does not have a microphone or loud speakers. Spreading
awareness waste segregation, management and disposal and its
importance in one’s life and also awareness about ban on plastic plays
a crucial role in this vastly growing world. As it helps to control waste
and protect earth from pollution and destruction
Awareness about waste segregation, management and disposal and its
importance in one’s life and also awareness about ban on plastic was
given to people in the form of street play. All the volunteers actively
participated in the activity and brought awareness to the localiets.
totally 22 street plays were performed in different panchayaths.

3. Compost Pit
Pipe Composting is the method in which wet waste is converted
into manure. Two pipes (either of Cement or PVC) are installed and
wet waste is stored in these pipes where they get converted into
manure through bacterial decomposition. Initially, cow dung and
jaggery are poured into th0e pipe which help in decomposition of
wet waste.

aware of the serious health hazards posed by open defecation,
motivate them to shun the unhealthy practice and make proper use
of the toilets to improve hygiene and sanitation in their villages, said

how effective was computer education in government schools.
