JASMINE COAST VIAGGI
A itinerary in the area of the Jasmine coast for a group of 20 American participants
A tour of 5 days with a tourist guide in Riace (from the Greek-Byzantine Ryaki, literally
small stream), a small town in the province of Reggio Calabria, located on the Ionian
coast, that stands on a valley once covered with oak, barely visible from the sea.
Many tourists come every year, especially in summer and spring, to visit this small reality,
attracted not only by the historical richness or the scenic beauty, but above all attracted
by the possibility of living a different experience, according to natural rhythms, in contact
with a territory still unspoiled. Riace is known all over the world for several reasons,
among them there is the discovery of the bronzes of Riace, two important Greek statues.
But it’s also know thanks to Domenico Lucano, ex mayor that made it “the host
country”. In fact, people from almost all over the world live here and they enriched the
country not only with new languages and cultures, but above all with life.
Day 1 Lamezia - Riace
Late afternoon arrival at Lamezia Terme airport, meeting with tourist guide and transfer for
Riace by bus. Check in Hotel Città Futura, time at leisure to explore the small country,
welcome in dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 2 Riace
Today we’ll see the best of the city on foot, with a full day guided tour, through
countryside, where you can admire the natural beauties and the intact landscape of the
country, but also villages characterized by narrow and particular streets. We’ll enjoy the
savory local cuisine, rich in “poor” dishes like pasta ca’ mudica (pasta with bread
crumbles) o fileja con la ‘nduja. In the evening we’ll take a tour to get to know the rich
culture and history of Riace in the many craft workshops, like ceramic laboratory, glass
laboratory, wood laboratory, where tourist we’ll be able to buy some souvenirs. We’ll
continue on foot toward the animal farm, rich of donkeys, sheep and horses. There is also
a beehive, from which honey is made. Return to the Hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Riace - Monasterace
This morning we head to Monasterace, a medieval village, named so because of a small
Byzantine monastery as early as the 6th century A.D. of which we can still admire the
ruins. We’ll also visit the archaeological museum of ancient Kaulon, rich of finds found in
the excavation campaign carried out by Orsi in the early ‘900. Particular in the museum is
the mosaic of the dragon, a polychrome mosaic depicting a sea dragon in a large dining
room and a floor decorated with a mosaic, used as a defense against evil forces. We’ll
consume our lunch at a local trattoria where they serve fragrant and mouth-watering
dishes. The rest of the day is free for individual sightings or shopping. Late evening return
in hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 4 Riace - Mammola
Late in the morning transfer to Mammola, an enchanting village rich in history, tradition
and gastronomic pleasure. We’ll taste the lunch in a typical restaurant, called la Taverna
del Borgo, renowned for its delicious dishes with stockfish. Than we’ll visit the famous
museum of Musaba, an open air museum, created by Nik Spatari, with a productive park
and a strong interactive program. On the way back to Riace we’ll stop to Riace Marina to
admire the breathtaking sea that offers jasmine’s coast. After dinner in Hotel, we’ll join the
locals in the main square to the religious festival dedicated to St. Cosimo and Damiano, a
local traditions with food, brass band concert and dancing tarantella.
Day 5 Riace - Lamezia
Early morning departure to Lamezia Terme airport. On the way back we’ll stop in the city
of Stilo, which houses a wonderful Byzantine cathedral built in the 9th Century, on a
panoramic point overlooking the tiles roofs of Stilo and the countrysides beyond. We’ll
resume the journey to the airport and along the way we’ll enjoy the spectacular
panoramic of the entire Ionian coast.
Price: euro 1.050 per person on double occupation and 25% reductions for children
under 12
Date: the tour is operated from April to September
Included the price:
- assistance of a tour leader through the tour
- accommodation in 4 star hotel in half board (breakfast and dinner)
- air conditioned coach
Not included in the price:
- travel insurance, tips and extra
- everything that is not mentioned in “included in the price”
In my opinion Calabria’s tourist has all the resources to be one of the most visited places.
Mainly because it is rich in different aspects like: history, culture, art and also
environment, that can be considered the strength of the country. But at the same time it
also has weaknesses characterized by: insufficient infrastructure, poor transport and the
not valorisation of the wealth of our territory (not only from the institutions but also from
the citizens).
