ColorFlow Training – ColorFlow Training
2.1 Overview
The purpose of this activity guide is to provide practical experience using ColorFlow software in Prinergy
Workflow software.
Both new and existing customers can use this set of training activities to practice using ColorFlow software
for the most common use cases in everyday workflow.
ColorFlow software introduces a new way of managing color and tonal calibration within the digital prepress
world. While some of the activities are designed to help existing Harmony users use ColorFlow software as
the Harmony replacement to achieve the same or better color reproduction results, other activities
demonstrates how to create color setup for color matching.
These activities assume that you can use Prinergy Workflow software to perform these tasks:
• Create jobs
• Create process templates
• Refine and output pages

2.5.1 Background
A print calibration curve makes the response of a halftone output device condition match either the tonal
response or the gray balance of a target device condition.
You can use print calibration curves to align a curve-controlled device with an industry specification. This
activity is to create a print calibration curve to align a press with an industry specification for tonal match.
Tonal match refers to Tone Value Increase (TVI), also known as dot gain, and uses the calculated Effective
Dot Area (EDA) for calibration. Calculations are based on the density measurements of each ink or colorant.
When using a ColorFlow curve for tonal calibration in Prinergy, you can make on-the-fly tonal adjustments.

Contents
2.8.1 Background
Most of ColorFlow's color control elements control color reproduction of process inks on printing devices.
Process inks, typically CMYK, are inks that are overprinted in various combinations on the output device to
achieve the desired color. Spot inks are specially mixed inks that are printed by output devices in addition to
process inks.
In ColorFlow, a default spot ink (black) is used for undefined spot ink. You can add more spot inks in addition
to the default one for a curve-controlled device condition or a print transfer curve. You can add a spot ink that
uses the same calibration curve as a process ink. You can also add a custom spot ink that uses a unique
curve to control its tonality.

2.9.1 Background
You can generate a PDF Verification report to verify the following:
• If the calibrated color response of a print calibration curve, a PCO, or an SCO matches either the
target response or the predicted response.
• If the predicted response of a print calibration curve, a PCO, or an SCO using the curve or the
DeviceLink method you have chosen matches the color response of the simulation or the conversion
target.
2.9.2 Tasks
Goal
Create Verification reports to check if the color response of a print calibration curve matches the target. In
this activity, you will create two reports: the first report compares the predicted response to the target
response; the second report compares the measured color response to the target response.
This activity assumes that you have already created a print calibration curve XX new print calibration curve
for gray balance in a previous activity (see page 21) .
6. In the Customer box, enter the report name: XX verification report to verify
predicted response (where xx is your initials).
6. In the Customer box, enter the report name: XX verification report to verify
calibrated color response (where xx is your initials).
2.9.3 Outcome
You have generated two Verification reports to verify if the predicted color response and the measured color
response match the target.
2.10.1 Background
You can align a printing device with an industry specification by creating a color setup, adding your device as
the PCO, and selecting the industry specification as the PCO simulation target.
8 https://workflowhelp.kodak.com/download/attachments/236127987/Approval_GRACoL_VerificationData.cgt?
api=v2&modificationDate=1688666714723&version=1
The PCO may have a colorimetric response or a tonal response, depending on the color response type in its
device condition and the way the simulation target is defined:
• If the device condition in the PCO has a color and tonal response, you can generate ICC Device and
DeviceLink profiles and use the tonal-match method or the gray-balance method to generate curves.
• If the device condition in the PCO has a tonal color response, or if the simulation target contains only
tonal data (for example, if the simulation target is an ISO TVI curve), you can only use the tonal-match
method to generate simulation curves.
2.10.2 Tasks
Goal
Create a color setup and add a press as the PCO, and then import a measurement data file to establish a
colorimetric response and a tonal response. This generates gray balance curves to align a press with an
industry specification. Note that the device profile is only required if you are generating DeviceLinks. For this
activity, there is no need to create a DeviceLink for final output so you don't need to generate the device
condition profile and the PCO profile.
2.10.2.1 Task 1: Create a new color setup and add a press as the PCO
1. In ColorFlow, click the Color Setups tab, and then click the Add button .
2. The Devices dialog box appears. If necessary, open it manually by selecting View > Devices or by
double-clicking the color setup viewer.
3. From the Devices dialog box, add a new offset press device:
a. Click Add Device.
b. In the Device Type list, select Offset Press - Sheetfed.
c. Name the device as Press A.
d. Drag Press A to the center of the viewer window.
4. In the Color Setups table, double-click the name of the color setup you just created and enter
GRACoL C1 2006 .
6. Click the Properties icon icon and define new properties for the device condition:
a. Click the Edit button next to the Plate Setup list.

c. In the Screening list, add or select 200 lpi.
d. In the Plate Line list, add or select 100.
e. Click OK.
f. In the Substrate list, add or select Type 1.
Note: if you select properties that were used in a previous activity, the message Use Existing
Device Condition appears. For the purpose of this training, you must use unique properties.
9. In a real-life situation, you would need to export the chart, output the chart from Prinergy, and then
measure the chart in ColorFlow. For the purpose of this training, you import a sample data file from
your ColorFlow installation folder:
a. Click the Measurement tab.
b. Click Import.
c. In the dialog box appeared, keep the default value and click OK.
d. Browser and select \Program
Files\Kodak\ColorFlow\SampleData\Measurements\ColorFlowSheetfed200lpiType1Linear.c

api=v2&modificationDate=1688666714273&version=1
2.10.3 Outcome
You have created a color setup to align a press to the GRACoL specification. The advantage of using a color
setup rather than a print calibration curve to align a press with a specification is that you can align other
printing devices with your press by adding them as the SCO in the color setup (see page 30).

In this activity, you will add a proofer to an existing color setup. In the color setup, the PCO is a press that is
aligned to an industry specification. The proofer becomes a Secondary Color Output (SCO). The SCO will be
aligned to the PCO using a DeviceLink. With this DeviceLink, the proofs will simulate the color that you print
from the offset press.
2.11.2 Tasks
Goal
Add an SCO—an inkjet proofer— to a color setup that you created in a previous activity (see page 27) with a
press defined as the PCO.
2.11.2.1 Task 1: Add an SCO to a color setup that already has a PCO defined
1. In ColorFlow, in the Color Setups table, select the color setup named GRACoL C1 2006.
In the Devices dialog box, add a new Inkjet proofer device:

6. Click OK.
1. In Prinergy, create a new job, and name it as XX Proofer to Industry Spec (where XX = your
initials).
3. Create a new Loose Page Output Process Template, and name it VPS - GRACoL :
a. In the Output To list, select Virtual Proof.
b. Select the ColorFlow Color Relationship Management check box.
c. For Halftone Output Mode, select Print Production.
d. In the Snapshot list, select Current State.
e. In the Color Setup list, select XX Proofer to Industry Spec.
f. In the Device list, select Proofer A.
g. Select the Device Condition.
h. In the ColorConvert settings, leave the Match Colors In Page Content check box cleared.
Color matching will not be applied on output.
i. Save the process template.
4. Select the test refined file, and process it with the process template VPS - GRACoL.
2.12.3 Outcome
You have created a color setup to align a proofer with an industry specification.
2.13 Activity 12: Use a color setup to refine RGB files to an industry
specification
2.13.1 Background
If you have RGB images or graphics that you want to print using a standard printing method, you must
convert the images and graphics to a CMYK color space. Converting RGB to an industry standard CMYK
ensures greater consistency and predictability in print, and may be required to meet a customer's print
specifications.
2.13.2 Tasks
Goal
Add an RGB color input to the GRACoL C1 2006 color setup you created in a previous activity (see page 27), and
then define the custom RGB reference using a sample data file from your ColorFlow installation folder.
1. In ColorFlow, in the Color Setups list table, select the color setup named GRACoL C1 2006.
2. Open the Device dialog box by selecting View > Devices or double-clicking the color setup viewer.

2.14.1 Background
With curve-controlled devices, you can include more than one device in a device condition. This is called a
device pool. The devices in a device pool must have the same device type and device condition properties.
After you create a device pool, the devices are pooled in all color setups in which the device condition is
used. If you remove one device from the device pool, the device is removed from the device condition in all
color setups where the device condition is used.
In the device condition, one device is the promoted device. The name of the promoted device appears in
bold. The color response of the promoted device is used as the color response of the device condition. A
device can be promoted only after it is characterized.
2.14.2 Tasks
Goal
To create a device pool by calibrating two curve-controlled devices in the same device condition in a color
setup.
1. In ColorFlow, from the Color Setups list, select the color setup named GRACoL C1 2006.
2. Add a new offset press device named Press B.
a. Select View > Devices or double-click the color setup viewer.
The Devices dialog box appears.
b. Click Add Devices.
c. In the Device Type list, select Offset - Sheetfed.
d. In the Device Name list, type Press B .
e. Drag and drop Press B to Press A in the color setup viewer.
This creates a press pool with Press A as the promoted device.
f. Click Close.
ColorFlow generates custom device curves for Press B to match the color response of the
Press A, which is the promoted device in the device condition.
2.14.3 Outcome
You have created a device pool.
