MATH1051 Assignment 1 Due: Fri 15 March 2024, 2 pm

• Write your answers clearly. Illegible assignments will not be marked. Photos, scans, and
typed solutions are all acceptable as long as they are well organised and easy to read.

• Show all your working. Correct answers without justification will not receive full marks.

• Wherever possible, answers should be given in exact form, otherwise round to two decimal
places.

• This assignment is worth 7.5% of the total assessment for the course.

• Submit your assignment via the Assignment 1 Gradescope submission link on Blackboard.
Make sure all your pages are allocated to the appropriate questions on Gradescope. There
will be a 1-mark penalty for students who fail to correctly allocate pages.

• Submit all applications for extensions via the my.UQ portal.

• Note if you are in MATH7051 (graduate program) you have a different version of this
assignment. Please make sure you have the correct version. MATH7051 students will
receive 0 marks for solutions to the wrong assignment.

• Marking:

– The maximum mark for the assignment is 25.

– Marking Scheme for questions/parts of questions worth 1 mark.
∗ Mark of 0: You have the wrong answer, or your answer is not well/thoroughly
justified.
∗ Mark of 1: You have the right answer, and it is correctly and thoroughly justified.
– Marking Scheme for questions/parts of questions worth 2 marks.
∗ Mark of 0: You have not submitted a relevant answer, or you have no strategy
present in your submission.
∗ Mark of 1: You have the right approach, but need to fine-tune some aspects of your
justification/calculations.
∗ Mark of 2: You have demonstrated a good understanding of the topic and techniques
involved, with clear justification and well-executed calculations.
– Marking Scheme for questions/parts of questions worth 3 marks.
∗ Mark of 0: You have not submitted a relevant answer, or you have no strategy
present in your submission.
∗ Mark of 1: Your submission has some relevance, but does not demonstrate deep
understanding or sound mathematical technique. This topic needs more attention!

MATH1051 Assignment 1 Due: Fri 15 March 2024, 2 pm

Part A: warm-up questions

1. (2 marks) Let f : R → R be a function defined as f (x) = sin(x) and g : R → R be a function
defined as g(x) = ex . Determine the domain and range of f ◦ g and g ◦ f .

2. (2 marks) Let A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {a, b, c}. Let R be a relation from A to B as fol-
lows: R(1) = a, R(2) = a, and R(3) = b. Is R a function? Justify your answer.

3. (2 marks) Let f (x) = x1/3 + 1. Determine f −1 or explain why f −1 does not exist.

1 + 3n
4. (2 marks) Let an = . Determine the limit of the sequence {an }, or show that the limit
4n
does not exist.

1 1
5. (2 marks) Let an = 1 + cos . Determine the limit of the sequence {an }, or show
n n
that the limit does not exist.

Part B Questions
B.1 (2 marks) Let f : R → R be a function defined as f (x) = ⌊x⌋, where ⌊x⌋ denotes the greatest
integer less than or equal to x. Prove or disprove the following statement: The inverse of f , f −1 ,
exists.

B.2 (2 marks) True or False: If f and g are one-to-one functions, then f ◦g is a one-to-one function.
If true prove it, if false provide a counter-example.

B.3 (3 marks) Consider a hypothetical string around the equator of the earth. Add a 20-metre
piece of string to it. The new string, which is 20m longer than the old string, is then held tight
in a circle around the earth’s centre. How tall must a person be to walk under the new string
without touching it? Perform a calculation that uses the formula for the perimeter of a circle, as
a function of the circle’s radius, p(r) = 2πr, and its inverse function r(p) to support your answer.

B.4 (5 marks) Consider a bank with a strange rule for giving out interest. After the first year
(and every other odd-numbered year) you hold the account, your money increases by 100 percent.

4
MATH1051 Assignment 1 Due: Fri 15 March 2024, 2 pm

After every even-numbered year (not including year 0), your money decreases by 60 percent. Let
a0 be the amount of money you initially put in the account.

(a) (2 marks) Define a recursive sequence for the amount of money you would have after n years.

(b) (2 marks) Write a sequence for the amount of money you would have in your account after
m number of EVEN years have elapsed. Your sequence should only depend on the initial
amount of money in your account, a0 , and m.

(c) (1 mark) Does the amount of money in your account converge or diverge as m → ∞. If it
converges, to what value?

B.5 (3 marks, note special grading scale) In this problem you will practice writing a question,
where you are asking for help. It can be a question about lecture material, a diagnostic quiz, a
past exam question, an SLT problem, a workshop problem, etc. Write your question at the end of
your assignment, and turn it in with the rest of your assignment. You do not have to post your
question on the Ed discussion board (but you can if you want). It will be graded based on the
following rules.
(1 mark) Your question sufficiently states or summarizes the problem or the material the question
is about, such that the reader does not have to look it up.
(1 mark) The question is specific and states what related resources you’ve reviewed.
(1 mark) The question states how you’ve attempted to solve or start the problem and explains
why you are stuck.
Note it is ok to not have a question you are stuck on. In this case, just write a question that you
think you can answer. The point is to get practice writing good questions. This skill will help you
in all your classes and in life.
