King gifted Tenali Raman five elephants, which he could not afford to care for due to his large family and poverty. His wife complained that they could not feed themselves, let alone five elephants. Tenali dedicated the elephants to the goddess Kali and set them free, but they went hungry. When the king learned of their plight, he confronted Tenali. Tenali explained he could not refuse the gift but also could not care for elephants. He suggested cows would have been more useful. The king realized his mistake and instead gifted Tenali five cows that could provide milk to feed his family.
