Exercise 1 - Read the text and answer the questions below.

The Bee

Bees live in a house that is called a hive. There are three kinds of
bees: workers, drones, and queens. Only one queen bee can live in
each hive. If she is lost or dead, the other bees will stop their work.
Bees are very wise and busy little creatures. They all join together
to build cells of wax for their honey. Each bee takes its proper
place and does its own work. Some go out and gather honey from
the flowers; others stay at home and work inside the hive. The cells
which they build are all of one shape and size, and no room is left
between them. The cells are not round. They have six sides.

Did you ever look into a glass hive to see the bees while at work? It is pleasant to see how
busy they always are.

But the drones do not work. Before winter comes, all the drones are driven out from the
hive so that they don’t eat the honey which they did not gather. It is not safe for children to
handle bees. Bees have a painful sting that they use in their defense.

Josh's School Trip

Last week, Josh went on a school trip to a very old town in the mountains. It was famous because
a long time ago people lived in caves there. When Josh and his classmates arrived at their hotel,
they found some of the caves in their room. They looked very interesting and the next morning
they got up early to go and visit them.

When they went inside the first cave, Josh was

unhappy because it was very dark inside. But after
a few minutes, he could see the old rock walls, but
he was disappointed as there was not much to see.

Suddenly, Josh heard something above his head. He

looked up and saw hundreds of bats. 'Mrs Daniel!
There are bats in this cave,' he whispered to his teacher.

'Yes, bats like living in caves,' his teacher answered. 'It's OK. They won't hurt you. Come and look
at this,' Josh's teacher took a torch out of her backpack and pointed it at one of the walls. There
were some beautiful paintings of the people and animals that lived there thousands of years ago.

'Amazing!' said Josh. "Would you like to live in a cave, Mrs Daniel,' asked Josh.
'No!' she laughed. 'I don't want to live in a cold, dark place like this,' she said. 'Come on! Let's
head back to the hotel to draw some pictures of the cave paintings. Josh was very satisfied in the
end.
