Identify and Resolve Network Problems: NAME: Nahom Alemseged ID: 18/14 Teacher's Name: Nigist Date

Network troubleshooting involves discovering and resolving issues with network connectivity, performance, security, and other aspects of a network. It is a logical process that network engineers follow to measure, identify, and address problems to improve overall network operations. Network troubleshooting can help identify security vulnerabilities and address them to prevent breaches and protect data. Network monitoring is important as it helps pinpoint the location of any network problems, prove the network is not the source of an issue, and identify potential problems before they occur through continuous monitoring.

UC: Identify and Resolve Network Problems (Individual Assignment Lo1-Lo3)

1. Define Command Line Interface?

2. Write the function of the following commands?
3. Ns lookup, ARP, Net stat, Netsh, Tracert, Route, Hostname, path ping, telnet, ping, ipconfig,
Whois, Dig, Satan, Saint and Net?
4. Define Network troubleshooting?
5. Why network monitoring is important?

ANSWER

1. Define Command Line Interface

A command line interface is a means of interacting with a device or computer program with
commands from a user of client, and responses from the device or program, in the form of lines of text.
Such access was first provided by computer terminals starting in the mid-
1960s.Getting_Started_with_Command_Line_Interface(360p).mp4

2. The function of commands Basic_Networking_Commands_(Part_1)(360p).mp4

NSLookup
NSLookup is the name of a program that lets user enter a host name and find out the corresponding IP
address or domain name system (DNS) record.
Users can also enter a command in nslookup to do a reverse DNS lookup and find the host name for
specified IP address
ARP
ARP the command displays and modifies the internet-to-adapter address translation tables used by the
Address in Networks and communication management.
The arp command displays the current arp entry for the host specified by the host name variable.
Net stat the generates displays that show network status and protocol statistics.
You can display the status of TCP and UDP endpoints in table format, routing table information, and
interface information.
The most frequently used options for determining network status are: S,R, and I.
Netsh
Network shell (netsh) is a command-line utility that allows you to configure and display the status of
various network communications server roles and components after they are installed on computers
running Windows Server.
Tracert
The Traceroute command (tracert) is a utility designed for displaying the time it takes for a packet of
information to travel between a local computer and a destination IP address or domain
Route
The route command allows you to make manual entries into the network routing tables. The route
command distinguishes between routes to hosts and routes to networks by interpreting the network
address of the Destination variable, which can be specified either by symbolic name or numeric address.
Hostname
Description. The /usr/bin/hostname command displays the name of the current host system. Only users
with root user authority can set the host name. The mkdev command and the chdev commands also set
the host name permanently.
Path ping
This command sends multiple echo Request messages to each router between a source and destination,
over a period of time, and then computes results based on the packets returned from each rout
Telnet
What is Telnet? Telnet, developed in 1969, is a protocol that provides a command line interface for
communication with a remote device or server, sometimes employed for remote management but also
for initial device setup like network hardware.
Ping Simple_PING_commands(360p).mp4
ping is a computer network administration software utility used to test the reach ability of a host on
an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It is available for virtually all operating systems that have networking
capability, including most embedded network administration software.
Ipconfig
This command is most useful on computers that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically.
This enables users to determine which TCP/IP configuration values have been configured by DHCP,
Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA), or an alternate configuration.
Whois
Description. The /usr/bin/whois command searches a user name directory and displays information about
the user ID or nickname specified in the Name parameter. The whois command tries to reach ARPANET
host internic.net where it examines a user-name database to obtain information.
Dig
Description. The dig (domain information groper) command is a flexible tool for interrogating DNS name
servers. It performs DNS lookups and displays the answers that are returned from the queried name
server(s).
Satan
The interactive SATAN command language offers several standard functions. It allows

 to change
o the flow of control in analysis procedures, and
o the flow of data by defining input and output data streams, global parameters display commands
fitdeconvolution execute
SAINT runs a scan using the command-line interface if one or more targets are specified on the command line,
Net is a command line method of mapping network drives to your local computer

3. Network troubleshooting is the act of discovering and correcting problems with connectivity,
performance, security, and other aspects of networks.
Network troubleshooting in the process of measuring, identifying, and resolving network-related issues.
It's also defined as a logical process network engineers follow to improve the overall network operations.
Network troubleshooting can help identify security vulnerabilities, such as malware infections,
unauthorized access, or weak passwords. By addressing these issues, network troubleshooting can help
prevent security breaches and protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.

4. Network monitoring is important because it helps you point out the exact location of any network
problems, or prove that the network is not the source of a problem. Continuous monitoring can also
help you to identify potential issues before they occur, so you can proactively solve problems before
they impact users.
