BSR 552- CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY I

TOPIC 4 – BUILDER PLANTS & MACHINERY

DATE: 3 / 11 / 2021
INTRODUCTION
• One of the most important resources that need to be
managed during the construction process are machineries
and equipment
• The cost of using machineries / equipment may varies
from range of 20%-40% of total construction cost.
• Some of the projects are labor intensive but most of the
infrastructure works are extensively using machineries &
equipment.
• Due to the cost involved, equipment & machineries must
be properly managed
• A good planning can help to minimize and avoid the
problems during construction stage.
OBJECTIVE OF PLANT & EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT

• To maximize the plant and equipment output

• To complement the works with available materials and
labor
• To reduce idling time
• To control and complete the job faster
CONTRCATOR MACHINERIES & EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION POLICY

BUY RENT

ADVANTAGES ADVANTAGES
- Plant and equipment is available - Low capital cost
when required - No maintenance cost
BUY - Important consideration of project - No storage cost
RENT award - Can be competitive in tender bids
BUY & RENT - Add asset value to the company when there are many suppliers
- Can be competitive in tender bids
DISADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
- Maintenance cost - High tender cost because of high
- Storage Cost rental cost
- Operator Cost - May not readily available when
- High Capital Investment needed
- Not a return in investment
ACQUISITION OF MACHINERIES AND EQUIPMENTS
• The decision to acquire construction machineries
/ equipment has to be considered seriously. This
is due to high capital required, some of the
machineries can be in the range of several
thousand to million ringgit
• If the company has decided to purchase, some of
the things such as maintenance, rental , cost
account and etc, must be taken into consideration
• Several factor to consider:
a) Output capacity- capacity of machine, skill
operator and etc.
b) Market demand- It is good to consider market
demand so that the purchase is not only for the
project but also for income generation

PLANNING OF MACHINERIES AND EQUIPMENTS
• Planning & scheduling of machineries/equipment must be
indicated on the work programme. Requisition on acquiring
must be made once the decision has been made to use a
particular machinery
• Analysis of levelling on the usage of machineries /
equipment can guide the managers to make critical decision.
• Undoubtedly critical activities will be given the most priority
• If during a particular day, 2 or more activities require the
use of same equipment, hence priority must be given to the
critical activity.
• Despite careful planning and acquisition, problems may still
occur during construction stage
PROBLEMS RELATED TO MACHINERIES & EQUIPMENTS

• Several problems faced by the contractors during construction progress. Among

of these problems are highlighted in Figure 1. However the important things to
do is to acquire the machineries /equipment needed.
Excavation Plant- Digger
• Multiple usage it finds its application.
• Building, highways, airport, roads, dams, water and sewer
systems, commercial buildings, housing developments,
hospital, schools, and office building
• Excavating, digging, small demolitions, landscaping and
preparation of construction sites.
• Helps in mining and offshore drilling
Excavation Plant- Bulldozer
Like any bulldozer scrape dozer too has tractor, ripper and
blade as the main part. It uses scraper for doing various
functions which in turn is controlled by joy stick, monitor
panels and pedals. The whole mechanism of the dozer
depends on the principle of the hydraulic systems.

Applications
• Land clearing and land leveling
• Preparing construction sites
• Helps in the construction of roads
• Construction and maintenance of canals and dams
• Removal of snows
• Other smaller and bigger civil engineering projects.
Excavation Plant- Scrapers
Scraper is an important mechanical equipment that is
used for excavating, digging and hauling of materials.
Scraper is available in different sizes and configuration
depending on the nature of the project. It is one of the
most versatile equipment that performs different
functions single handedly.

Application
• It helps in preparing the ground for the new loads of
solid waste that constantly arrive.
• Helps in preparing work at landfills.
• It digs, the site, loads, hauls and dumps the wastes
materials and helps in preparing the sites for
construction.
• It is also used in road construction etc.
Plant- Crane
Armed with heavy carriage capacities and powerful
engines, the construction crane finds their
applicability in numerous projects like.

Application
At construction sites, cranes are used to lift steel,
concrete and other materials.

i. Construction of bridges.
ii.Construction of ports.
iii.Lifting heavy industrial devices.
iv. Used in lifting of containers on sea ports etc.
Batching Plant

Equipment used at a concrete batching plants includes soils, weight hoppers

conveyors, mixer engines, and auxiliary generators. The raw material like cement,
sand and aggregate are batched and mixed into slightly moisture concrete. The
required concrete is fed via conveyor belt into the block machine. Boom Scrapper is
used for pulling the material towards the gates for batching of aggregates. Cement
Hopper with Screw Conveyor, concrete mixer reversible drum, weight batcher with
precision scales for aggregate and cement are some of the other equipments that
are used in concrete batching plants.
Summary
• Economics (usage and return of investment)
• Suitability with type and quantity of work
• Availability of competent and responsible operator
• Maintenance /rental cost
• Storage and workshop
• Future use

• Prevention of materials and labour wastage

• Smooth execution of work

• Productivity

• Quality Control

• Completion of project within the contract period
