Idea of Joining of Sentences

Joining of sentences means combining two or more simple sentences into one single
sentence.
sentences can be joined to form either Simple, Complex or Compound Sentences.

Examples:
1. He went to the shop. His intention was to buy the book.
He went to the shop to buy the book. (Simple sentence)
2. This is a nursing home. I was born here.
This is the nursing home where I was born. (Complex sentence)
3. Ramesh was tired. He soon fell asleep. Ramesh was tired and soon fell asleep. (Compound
sentence)
Joining Into Simple Sentences
Simple sentences can be joined into a single simple sentence sing the following methods:
By using a participle +ing
1. The child saw the toy. It cried out in joy. Seeing the toy the child cried out in joy.
2. She was tired. She lay on the bed. Being tired she lay on the bed.
1. The student entered the classroom. He sat on the bench. Entering the classroom the student sat
on the bench.
4. The chair is broken. Don't sit on it. Don't sit on the broken chair.
5. They appeared for an examination. It was a written examination.
They appeared for a written examination.
By using a Nominative Absolute or an absolute phrase
1. The teacher entered the class. The students stood up.
The teacher having entered the class the students stood up.
2. The day was very hot. We did not go out.
The day being very hot we did not go out.
3. The weather was fine. We enjoyed the tour.
The weather being fine we enjoyed the tour.
4. The sun rose. We started our journey.
The sun having risen we started our journey.
5. The police arrived at the spot. The criminals fled.
They police having arrived at the spot the criminal fled.
By using an infinitive - To
1. They went to Agra. They wanted to see the Taj Mahal.
They went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.
2. I went to market. I wanted to buy some fruits.
I went to market to buy some fruits
3. Srijita met Pushpita. Her intention was to wish her on her birthday.
Srijita met Pushpita to wish her on her birthday.
4. This sum is very difficult. None can do it.
This sum is too difficult to do.
5. We have some duties. We have to do them.
We have some duties to do.
By using a noun or a phrase in apposition
1. Rabindranath was the greatest poet of India.
He received the Nobel Prize in literature.
Rabindranath, the greatest poet of India, received the Nobel Prize in literature
2. Subhash Chandra Bose was the greatest patriot. He Was called Netaji.
Subhash Chandra Bose, the greatest patriot, was called Netap
3. Rammohan Roy was a social reformer. He abolished the custom of “Sati”.

4. The tiger is a beautiful and strong animal. It is the national animal of our country.

By using a preposition with a noun or a gep
1. She heard the news. She left for home On hearing the news she left for home.
2. He was ill. He went to school. In spite of his illness he went to school
3. He worked hard. He could not succeed With his hard work he could not succeed
4. He came back from school. He went to play On coming back from school he went to play
5. She is intelligent. She is obedient 100.
Besides being intelligent she is obedient.
By using an adverb or an adverbial phrase
1. Subir passed the examination. He was lucky Luckily
Subir passed the examination.
2. It was raining heavily. We could not play today
We could not play today because of heavy rain
3. She will stand first in the class. It is certain
Certainly she will stand first in the class
4. Rahul did not come to school. He was Rahul did not come to school due to illness
5. It will rain today. There is a possibility of it.
Possibly it will rain today.

Join each pair of sentences into a simple sentence :


1. They have a house. It is well maintained.

Joining Into Complex Sentences
Simple sentences can be joined into a single complex sentence using the following methods:
By using noun clause
1. Bimal would be cheated. He knew it.
Bimal knew that he would be cheated.
2. He is honest. People believe it. People believe that he is honest.
3. Bipasha was an ideal mother. Everybody knew this. Everybody knew that Bipasha was an
ideal mother.
4. Hippos love to stay in water. It is evident. It is evident that hippos love to stay in water.
5. The sailor will no return, We fear it. We fear that the sailor will not return.
By using adjective clause
1. You must have met my elder sister. She is an MA. You must have met my elder sister
who is an MA.
1. Flies are insects. They spread many diseases. Flies are insects which spread many
diseases.
2. The tree is full of flowers. The tree is in our garden The tree which is in our garden is full
of flowers.
3. He will come to meet me. I don’t know the time. I don’t know the time when he will
come to meet me
4. I know the girl. Her English book was lost. I know the girl whose English book was lost.
By using adverb clause
1. He was very rich. He lived a humble life. Though he was very rich he lived a humble life.
2. He earns any money. He spends it immediately. No sooner does he earn any money than
he spends
3. Goutam could not play the match. He had an injury

4. You do not study well. You will not pass. You will not pass unless you study well.
5. It may rain. I shall not go to play. I shall not go to play if it rains.

Joining Into Compound Sentences


Simple sentences can be joined into a compound sentence using conjunctions like and, or,
but, so, yet, elther-or, neither…nor, not only…..but also, still, as well as, nevertheless,
however etc.

1. He was a teacher. He was a writer. He was both a teacher and a writer.


2. Shuvam may do the work. His brother may do the work.
Either Shuvam or his brother may do the work.
3. He is educated. He is not a gentleman.
He is educated but he is not a gentleman.
6. Walk fast. You may miss the bus. Walk fast or you may miss the bus.
7. Satyajit Ray was a great director. He was also a great Writer.
Satyajit Ray was not only a great director but also Great writer.

Exercise:
1. Barun is proud. He cannot learn.
2. Mili worked hard. She failed the examination.
3. They can buy a building. They can buy a car.
4. Gourab does not know swimming. He likes to go to the seas.
5. Robin is a genius. He is also meritorious.
