Advantages of LANs
• LAN is a productivity tool.

Limitation of LANs

Ans NETWORK TOPOLOGY
A network topology is the physical and logical arrangement of nodes and

and software with switch and router features. Network topologies are often
represented as a graph.
Different types of topologies are:-
• Bus Topology
• Ring Topology
• Star Topology
• Tree Topology
• Mesh Topology
• Hybrid Topology
A) BUS TOPOLOGY
In a bus topology, devices are connected to a single communication line called a
bus. This means that all devices share the same communication medium, and data
is transmitted in both directions along the bus. Each device on the bus receives
all the data, but only the intended recipient processes it. If a device wants to
transmit data, it waits for an opportunity when the bus is not being used by other
devices.

Merits of bus topology
1. The amount of media is used is very small.
2. The new stations are added by tapping working bus very easily.
3. The stations are connected to the bus using a passive tap.
Demerits of bus topology
1. Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.
2. The nodes must be intelligent.
3. The fault isolation is difficult, if the entire network shuts down.
B) RING TOPOLOGY
In a ring topology, devices are connected in a circular manner, forming a closed
loop. Each device is connected to exactly two other devices, creating a continuous
path for data transmission. Data travels in one direction around the ring, passing
through each device until it reaches its destination. This topology requires devices
to take turns transmitting data, and if any device in the ring fails, it can disrupt
the entire network.

D) TREE TOPOLOGY
In a tree topology, devices are connected in a hierarchical structure resembling a
tree. The main difference from a bus or star topology is that devices are connected
to a central hub or switch, which is then connected to other hubs or switches,
creating multiple levels or branches. This allows for greater scalability and
organization of the network. However, if the central hub or any intermediate hub
fails, it can disrupt the connectivity of the devices connected to it.

Merits of Mesh topology
1) High reliability: The presence of multiple paths ensures that if one link fails,
data can be rerouted through alternative paths, minimizing downtime.
2) Scalability: It is easy to add or remove devices in a mesh network without
disrupting the overall connectivity.
Demerits of Mesh topology
1) Cost: Implementing a mesh topology can be expensive due to the large number
of direct connections required between devices.
2) Complexity: Managing and maintaining a mesh network can be complex and
time-consuming, especially as the number of devices and connections increases.
