Mil Essay

The document discusses the effects of giving children access to social media and the internet at too young of an age. It notes that while the internet can be educational, early exposure can also lead to issues like distraction, believing misinformation, and viewing inappropriate content. Media and Information Literacy
Too Soon: The Comfort of the Internet
The children of these youth can be considered blessed. As the goal of innovation is to make the
difficult things easier, this generation’s children have a lot of convenience. They have news,
entertainment, knowledge and help all at one tap of the finger. But generally there are a lot of things to
cover when talking about the effects of media to the Filipino youth. So to combat that, this essay will
tackle a specific problem that being, that children have access to social media WAY TOO SOON.

Back then, when I was a child around the age of the children now. I idolized my uncles that had
mobile phones because they could do so much within a rectangular box. They let me watch videos, they
let me play games and it was a lot of fun. So when the time came that my parents first gave me my own
mobile phone, I used it to improve on areas where I need a phone. I used it to search for things on the
internet, watch tutorials on YouTube and so much more. This is argument #1: New Media can be
educational. My siblings had their first smartphones when they were 7 or 8, but before that they already
had their first interaction early on through my parents, myself and members of our family. Due to the
being exposed early they know how to navigate the internet at a young age. This helps them with their
homework mainly because of Google and video tutorials on YouTube. And when the Pandemic came
there was a trend to post lessons on the internet which helped them even more.
On the contrary, their early exposure has also brought in numerous problems. A common rising
problem among children that were given phones is that they are very much distracted. Games have
always been existing on mobile phones but with the Pandemic also came an everlasting trend of online
games. These are the type of games that cannot be paused, which is the root of “Wait lang mama di koi
to pwede i-pause”. This types of games are very draining on the brain and they are very taxing to one’s
critical thinking. Another common problem among the Filipino youth is that they easily believe
everything they read on the Internet. They believe each and every news easily which is why they are the
most prone to fake news, which is why it is important that we teach the youth how to assess
information they see on the Internet. A problem worth noting on the topic of effects of media to the
Filipino Youth is Porn. Surprisingly, the average age of a child the first time they see porn is 11 years.
Children do not look for them, it is programmed to find them. Highly sexualized, violent material poses
many risks for a developing brain. In the adolescent years when brains are still developing, viewing porn
can deform the pleasure centers of their brain. For many youth, the euphoric “high” that occurs quickly
develops into a coping style for escaping emotional distress. Therefore, young viewers seek more
graphic and violent content, an indicator of addiction. Which is the cause of the rising teenage
pregnancy in our country.

In conclusion, the effects of media on the Filipino youth can neither be good or bad. It is up to how the
child chooses to be affected. Should he choose one route over the other, it is up to us media literate
individuals to help nourish the growing children. So that when the time comes for them to teach the
Youth in their time, we can hope for a smarter, more responsible, more sensible and a more Media
Literate Philippines.
