Design Brief
You have to get to the lunch area on the top floor somehow, the pneumatic lift solves this
problem by giving you easy and quick access to the lunch area on the top floor. In real life motors
are used and you can choose what floor you want to go to. There are also doors that open by
pressing a button and close after a certain amount of time using motion detectors, whiles my
smaller version uses pneumatic power and syringes.
Design Specifications
The lift is colorful and made out of popsicle sticks. When you press down on the bigger syringe,
the smaller syringe is pushed and makes the lift go up to the roof.
Constraints
The materials I used to make the lift had to be light otherwise they would weigh the lift down, so
I had to used light popsicle sticks. The height at which the lift reached was limited, so I had to
lower the roof. My popsicle sticks were breaking from the pins so I had to get other pins.
Problems
I faced the problem of the project being wobbly so I made it again. I also faced the problem of
not being able to find strong popsicle sticks and the ones I had were breaking when I put thumb
pins in them, so I drilled holes and used paper fasteners. Buildings I was making myself were
wobbly, so I used boxes instead.
Likes
I liked the fact that boxes worked well a warehouse building and I had a lot of takealot boxes to
make a warehouse. I also liked the fact that making the project was not too expensive.
Dislikes
What I didn't like was that there was no tutorial on how to make it so it required a lot of imagining
and picturing to make the lift and warehouse.
Conclusion
I learnt a lot from this project about the mechanism and how two syringes can generate so much
power and I learnt how to use my imagination to make something beautiful. This project also
gave me a feel of grade 7.
