the hillock, does it have the acceleration? If so, what is the direction of the acceleration? Does
the centripetal force and the centrifugal force constitute an action-reaction pair? Explain.
Ans: It has centripetal acceleration. It is directed toward the centre of the hillock. [1, 1]
No. The centripetal force is a real force acting on an object. [1, 1]
The centrifugal force is not a real force; it (seems to) act radially away from the centre of the
circle. It results from the effect of inertia.

4. (b, i) What is thermal conductivity? Express its unit in SI system. How do heat transfer and internal
energy differ?
Thermal conductivity of a material: Thermal conductivity of a material can be defined as the [2]
rate of heat transfer per unit area per unit temperature gradient.
The unit of thermal conductivity in SI system is watt per metre per kelvin (W m-1 K-1).
Heat transfer is energy in transit. Heat transfer is not stored as such in a system. [2]
The internal energy of a system is the sum of the energies of all the constituent particles. The
internal energy can be stored in a system.

5. (a, i) Water rises in a capillary tube, whereas mercury falls in the same tube. Explain.
Ans: In the case of water, the cohesive force between water molecules is much less than the adhesive [1]
force between water molecules and molecules of tube material. So water easily rises up against
the gravity.
In the case of mercury, the cohesive force between mercury molecules is much stronger than [1]
the adhesive force between mercury molecules and molecules of tube material.
So mercury cannot rise up against the gravity, and falls.

5. (b, i) Discuss the important role of ciliary muscles for the eye. Name the dispersion elements used in
the optical spectrometer.
Ans: The ciliary muscles which are attached to the eyelens can vary the thickness of the eyelens, thus [1]
alter the focal length of the lens to obtain a sharp image on the retina.
When near objects are viewed, the ciliary muscles contract and permit the eyelens to form a [1]
more convex shape.
When distant objects are viewed, the ciliary muscles relax and the eyelens becomes less convex. [1]
