Caliper Calibration Procedure
Caliper Calibration Procedure
1. SUMMARY
This procedure defines the steps necessary to ensure that Calibration of the Calipers
done per standard process and conducted/implemented in a timely manner.
1.1. mResponsibility and authority for this procedure are defined within this procedure.
3. SCOPE
This procedure applies to all Calipers used to measure product characteristics per
specifications and in any department at ER.
4. RESPONSIBILITY
4.1 It is the responsibility of Quality Manager or designee to review all Calipers for
Calibration.
4.2 It is the responsibility of the Quality Manager or designee to conduct calibration for
Calipers and label calibration stickers as required.
4.3 It is the responsibility of the Quality Manager to calibrate Caliper using Standard
Procedure and recording the data in the Calibration Matrix tabs.
5. DEFINITIONS
5.2 Quality Manager – Individual responsible for receiving, tracking, monitoring, adding
measurement equipment into the calibration matrix/log and notifying all Stake Holders of an
addition/change.
6. PROCEDURE
NOTE: Standards and equipment used must have a valid calibration certificate
6.2 Calibration Procedure “Calibration Matrix tabs/file must be used for Caliper
Calibration Record”
6.3 Clean the Vernier Caliper’s measuring surfaces, the granite surface, and the gauge
blocks to be used
NOTE:
2. Zero the Vernier Caliper at the start and adjust as required by the manufacturers’
specifications. If you cannot zero it then mark it as a fail
3. When testing the Vernier Caliper, one of the points must be near the lower limit that
the instrument can measure, another somewhere in the middle, and the third near the upper
limit
4. Use a conversion factor of 25.40 mm/in to convert gauge block lengths to Metric from
Imperial. If gauge block in Metric, No need for conversion.
6.4 Step 1:
Measure the ambient temperature and record it.If temperature found below 67
deg.F or above 71 deg.F, Contact Quality Manager.
6.5 Step 2:
Test Characteristic: Inspect the inside and Outside Jaws, Depth Gauge and
sliding jaw for smooth movement
6.6 Step 3:
Test Method: Using gauge blocks, measure and record 9 different lengths
Acceptable Limit: +/- 0.05 mm
Test Method: Make 2 equal stacks of gauge blocks on the granite surface to a
height in the mid-range of the instrument, measure and record the height with the
rod between the two stacks and the flat part of the instrument flush against the
top of each of the two stacks
