1. What do you understand by central tendency? Under what conditions is median more suitable
than other measures of central tendency?

2. What do you understand by mode? Discuss its relative merits and demerits as a measure of
central tendency. Also give two practical situations where you will recommend the use of mode.

3. What are the criteria of a good average? Compare the mean, the median and the mode in the
light of these criteria. Why are averages called measures of central tendency?
4. How would you account for the predominant choice of arithmetic mean of statistical data as a
measure of central tendency? Under what circumstances would it be appropriate to use mode
or median?
5. Point out the merits and demerits of the mean the median, and the mode as measure of central
tendency of numerical data.
6. Explain the relative merits of geometric mean over other measures of central tendency
7. If the population has doubled itself in twenty years, is it correct to say that the rate of growth
has been 5% per annum?
8. Define Harmonic Mean and discuss its merits and demerits. Under what situations would you
recommend its use.

serve? Comment on some of the well-known measures of variation along with their respective
merits and demerits.
10. What is meant by dispersion? In your opinion which is the best method of finding out dispersion
and why?
11. What are the chief requisites of a good measure of dispersion? In the light of those, comment
on some of the well-known measures of dispersion and discuss their uses.
12. What do you understand by absolute and relative measures of dispersion? Explain advantages
of the relative measures over the absolute measures of dispersion. (b) Define mean deviation
and standard deviation. Explain, why economists prefer mean deviation to standard deviation in
their analysis.
13. Explain the mathematical properties of standard deviation. Why is standard deviation used
more than mean deviation? Or. Explain the superiority of standard deviation over other
measures of dispersion
14. What do you understand by absolute and relative measure of dispersion? Explain advantages of
the relative measures over the absolute measures of dispersion.
15. What do you understand by coefficient of variation? What purpose does it serve?
