Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will
tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are
provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Constructions are step-by-step processes used to create accurate geometric figures. To create
construction by hand, there are a few tools that you can use:
Definition:
Angles are shapes, formed by two lines or rays diverging from a common point.
Arc is any unbroken part of the circumference of a circle or other curved line.
A circle is a set of points in a plane that are equidistant from a given point.
Parallel Lines are lines that remain the same distance apart over their entire length.
Perpendicular Lines are lines that meets or crosses another line at right angles (90 0).
Radius is the length of the line from the center to any point on the circle.
Rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles.
Regular Hexagon is a polygon with six equal sides and angles.
Regular Pentagon is a polygon with five equal sides and angles.
Square is a parallelogram with 4 congruent sides and 4 right angles.
Triangle is a polygon with three sides and three angles.
Vertex is a corner or a point where lines meet.

Perform the following steps to construct your own basic geometric figures:
Constructing Triangles
We can construct a triangle when we know some of its measurements, that is, its sides, its
angles, or some of its sides and angles.
Example:
How do you construct a triangle ABC whose sides are 7cm, 5cm and 3cm with the use of a ruler and a
compass?
Step 2: Set the compass width to 5 cm. Draw an arc 5 cm away from point A. The third
vertex of the triangle will be somewhere along this arc.
Step 3: Set the compass width to 3 cm. Draw an arc from point B. Note where this arc crosses
the first arc. This will be the third vertex of the triangle.
Step4: Use your ruler to join points A and B to the point where the arcs intersect (C)

According to the property of
triangles, the sum of any two
sides of a triangle is always
greater than the third side
Example:
Construct a triangle PQR given that PQ= 4cm, QR= 6.5cm and m PQR 600 .
Step 1: Draw the line segment QR = 6.5 cm. (Here we take the longest side)
Step 2: Using a protractor, at Q, draw a line QX making an angle of 600
Step 3: With Q as center, draw an arc of radius 4cm to cut the line (QX) at P.
Step 4: Join PR.
Constructing Squares
Step 1: Start with a given line segment AB. This will become one side of the square.
5 NegOr_Q3_Mathematics7_Module8_v2
Step 3: Set the compasses on B and any convenient width. Scribe an arc on each side of B,
creating the two points F and G.
Step 4: With the compasses on G and any convenient width, draw an arc above the point B.
Step 5: Without changing the compass' width, place the compass on F and draw an arc
above B, crossing the previous arc and creating point H.
Step 6: Draw a line from B through H. This line is perpendicular to AB, so the angle ABH
is a right angle (90°); This will become the second side of the square.
Step 7: Set the compass on A and set its width to AB. This width will be held unchanged as
we create the square's other three sides.
6 NegOr_Q3_Mathematics7_Module8_v2
Step 8: Draw an arc above point A.
Step 9: Without changing the width, move the compass to point B. Draw an arc across BH
creating point C - a vertex of the square.
Step 10: Without changing the width, move the compasses to C. Draw an arc to the left of C
across the exiting arc, creating point D – a vertex of the square.

2 Solving Sides and Angles of a Polygon
DISCUSSION:
TRIANGLE
A. Problem Solving Involving Sides in Triangles
DEFINITION:
Perimeter of Triangle: The perimeter of any two-dimensional figure is defined as the distance
around the figure. We can calculate the perimeter of any closed shape just adding up the length
of each of the sides.
Therefore, in the case of a triangle, the perimeter will be the sum of all the three sides. If a
triangle has three sides a, b and c, then,
Perimeter, P = a + b +c

The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is
equal to the sum of the measures of its two remote
interior angles.
m∠BCE = m∠B + m∠A
