EXPERIMENT NO - 1

AIM:-

To determine the molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution by 0.05 M

Mohr’s salt solution
Theory:-

Ionic equation is MnO4 -- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

Potassium permanganate acts as a powerful oxidising agent in redox
titrations. It acts as good oxidizing agent in acidic medium in which
permanganate ion is reduced to manganese ions.
Short procedure:-

Burette solution: Potassium permanganate solution

Pipette solution: Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate
Indicator : Self Indicator (KMnO4)
Acid to be added : Dil. Sulphuric acid (4N)
Temperature : Room temperature
End point : Colourless changes to pink colour
Molarity of Ferrous ammonium sulphate is 0.05 M
Calculation of the amount of FAS

Molar mass of FAS is 392g

Volume of solution of Mohr’s salt = 100 ml
Molarity of Mohr’s salt solution = Mass/molar mass X 1000/100
0.05 = Mass/392 X 10
Mass = 0.05x392/10
Mass of FAS is 1.96g
Observation Table:-

KMnO4 VS FAS Indicator : Self (KMnO4)

S.NO Volume of FAS in Burette Reading Volume of Concordant
ml initial Final KMnO4 in ml value in ml
1 20 0 20.3 20.3
2 20 0 20.3 20.3 20.3

Calculations:-

Volume of potassium permanganate V1 = 20.3 ml

Molarity of potassium permanganate M1 = ?
Volume of ferrous ammonium sulphate V2 = 20 ml
Molarity of ferrous ammonium sulphate M2 = 0.05M
Using Molarity equation a M1V1 = b M2V2
5 x M1 x 20.3 = 1 x 0.05 x 20
M1 = 0.0098 M
Molarity of potassium permanganate is 0.0098 M
Strength calculation:-

Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity of KMnO4 X Molar mass of KMnO4

= 0.0098 X 158
= 1.54g
Result:-
Molarity of potassium permanganate solution is 0.0098 M
Strength of potassium permanganate solution is 1.54g.
EXPERIMENT NO - 2

AIM:-

To determine the molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution by 0.025 M

Oxalic acid solution
Theory:-

Ionic equation is
5 COO-- + 2 MnO4-- + 16H+ 10CO2 + 2Mn2+ + 8H2O
COO
Potassium permanganate acts as a powerful oxidising agent in redox
titrations. Oxalic acid acts as an reducing agent .
Short procedure:-

Burette solution: Potassium permanganate solution

Pipette solution: Oxalic acid solution
Indicator : Self Indicator (KMnO4)
Acid to be added : Dil. Sulphuric acid (4N)
Temperature : 60 – 70 oC
End point : Colourless changes to pink colour
Molarity of Oxalic acid is 0.025 M
Calculation of the amount of Oxalic acid

Molar mass of Oxalic acid is 126g

Volume of solution of Oxalic acid = 100 ml
Molarity of Oxalic acid solution = Mass/molar mass X 1000/100
0.025 = Mass/126 X 10
Mass = 0.025x126/10
Mass of Oxalic acid is 0.315g

Molarity of potassium permanganate M1 = ?
Volume of Oxalic acid solution V2 = 20 ml
Molarity of Oxalic acid solution M2 = 0.025M
Using Molarity equation a M1V1 = b M2V2
5 x M1 x 19.2 = 2 x 0.025 x 20
M1 = 0.0104 M
Molarity of potassium permanganate is 0.0104 M
