knowledge that was not only well ahead
of its time but that also had the potential
to later become an important foundation
of anatomy studies – sadly, he never
published his findings.

B ut Leonardo’s interest, which he

took very seriously (in his diaries
he wrote that he dissected more than thirty
human cadavers in his life, creating
meticulous notes and sketches), was the
inspiration for this chapter. Originally
we planned to have a dissection room in
the crypt, and would use the master’s
numerous sketches showing elements
of human and animal anatomy as a basis
for the chapter’s contents, but after several
first drafts it was clear that the dark
atmosphere we were going for would be
too chilling and almost sickening – definitely 1. The crypt entrance incorporates several Renaissance symbols of death. These include the hourglass, scythe, skull

T he space we needed had to be big enough
to house the full-scale model of the

Even though Leonardo probably never

it was for him to mix theory and experience

as a proof of his claim to build a safe

was clad with conical armor reminiscent
of a turtle’s shell, with only a small port
in the observation tower in its top part.
Around the edges of the armor were to
be fixed a ring of light cannons, leaving
not a single blind spot. The only weakness
of the design was its slow speed and
limited maneuverability in difficult terrain,
caused by its relatively thin wheels, and
a propulsion system requiring the manual
labor of six human crewmembers. This
problem prevented similar designs from
being used on the battlefield until well 1. Leonardo’s sketch of the armored vehicle – tank.

Each of them had to be potentially possible

increased efficiency of mundane tasks and
day-to-day activities of common folk.
This machine operates on a quite simple
principle. The operator turns the handle
to raise a weight into the air (the height
it is raised to determines the length of
the operation, so it can be tweaked for
different purposes and requirements).
As the weight lowers due to the pull of
gravity, it actuates two movements. First,
the large screw rotates, slowly pushing
a metal plate (future file) under the main
part of the machine. Second, a massive
hammer is being repeatedly raised by the
machine and let fall – with each fall a
groove is cut into the metal plate. Instead
of hard physical labor, the operator just
needs to wind up the machine and, after
finishing a file, exchange it for a new metal
plate.

talents and his life was full of
contradictions. He was one of the most
renowned military engineers of his time,
but he cared for life (human or otherwise)
deeply and even refused to eat meat. He
was one of the most skilled anatomists,
amassing a great number of sketches
and notes about the human body. However,
he never made any attempt to publish
them, so we began learning the depth of
his knowledge only during the 20th

in the history of mankind, but finished
only several of them during his life.
