1.8.1 Summary
Real Time Accelerator, RTA, boards are used on Advant Station 500 Unix workstations, on NT
workstations, and on Advant Station 100 systems (Kontron PCs). They include communication
interfaces for MasterBus 300 (for Master systems) and DCN (for MOD systems).
RTA boards are available for the old 16-bit ISA bus and the new 32-bit 5V PCI bus.
Below is a description of the RTA boards used in Windows or NT workstations. For use in Unix
workstations other documents are available.
The ISA RTA boards requires special BIOS functionality in the NT workstations. ABB has
specified special HP and Compaq workstations where the BIOS is modified for the ISA RTA
boards. Those NT workstations have part numbers specifically defined for ABB.
The PCI RTA boards have ‘Plug & Play’ functionality. This means that the boards do not have
any straps or switches that need to be set before installation. At start up of the workstation the
system will communicate with the RTA board to set the dual port memory area, register
addresses, and the interrupt request level automatically.

A 1Mbyte memory hole above the 1Mbyte boundary of the computer memory has to be defined
in the BIOS. This memory area is used for communication between the RTA board and the
computer. The configuration is done at startup of the computer. Stop the computer directly after
power up and enter the BIOS configuration mode. Look for the “Memory hole” selection in the
various menues of the BIOS. Locate the hole between 15 and 16Mbyte.
Save the setting and continue the startup.

Figure 1-5. Monitor and PS/2 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse Extension, Principle
The requirements on the extension is that it must be able to handle a video resolution of
1280x1024 pixels at 75 Hz frame rate with the desired length.
Normally the NT workstation works with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 pixels and a video
cable 1.8m (6ft) long.
Before connecting the extension, check that the screen resolution of the NT workstation is set to
1280x1024. Otherwise the screen at the other end of the extension will be black.
NT workstations always generate separate TTL level sync signals, not sync on green!

A.2 Terminology
Accelerated Graphics Port, AGP, can be a specific connector on the motherboard for a video
board, or an interface for an integrated video controller. The bus is 32 bit wide and the bus clock
is 66MHz. The bandwidth in bytes is hence (32/4) x 66 =264Mbyte/sec. This is called a 1xAGP
port. A 1xAGP port transfers data once per clock cycle. A 2xAGP port transfers data on both the
rising and falling edges of the bus clock. The data transfer rate will then be doubled to
528Mbyte/sec.. The next step will be an AGP bus with a 133MHz clock, 4xAGP, which will
have a data transfer rate of 1Gbyte/sec. The bus was first available on the Pentium II processor.
Advanced Technology Attachment, ATA, is the most common mass storage (disk, CD-ROM,
tape) interface used in PCs today because of its lower cost and very favorable performance.
ATA is also known as IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) where most of the bus electronics is
integrated on the disk itself. It has a 16-bit wide data bus. The latest step on the ATA bus
evolution is called Ultra ATA/66 where the maximum data transfer rate is 66Mbyte/sec. The
connector is a 40-pin flat cable connector though ATA/66 uses an 80-lead cable where the
additional 40 leads are used as signal ground.
Basic Input Output System, BIOS, is the on-board software that handles the accesses to the
hardware.
Chip set, a set of devices that connects the CPU, memory (RAM), AGP port, PCI port, together.
Dual Inline Memory Module, DIMM, a small memory card installed in workstations, printers
a.s.o. The card has one line of contact surfaces on each side of the circuit board, thus two (dual)
lines of contacts.
Front Side Bus, FSB, the bus between the CPU chip and the RAM. Also connects to the AGP
port and the PCI bridge. Today the speed is 66MHz or 100MHz. The next step is 133MHz.
MultiMedia EXtensions, MMX, is a set of 57 instructions that improve graphics, video and
audio features. Introduced on the Pentium MMX processor.
Peripheral Component Interconnect, PCI, a 32-bit wide input/output bus. The bus clock
frequency is 33MHz and hence the bandwidth in bytes is: (32/8) x 33 = 132Mbyte/second.
Random Access Memory, RAM, a read/write memory where the addresses can be accessed in
random order.
Read Only Memory, ROM, a memory from which data can be read but not written.
Single Instruction, Multiple Data, SIMD, the Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions consist of
70 new instructions and includes single instruction, multiple data for floating-point, additional
SIMD-integer and Cacheability control instructions. Some of the benefits to desktop and
Internet applications of Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions include: Higher resolution and
quality images can be viewed and manipulated than previously possible: High quality audio,
MPEG2 video, and simultaneous MPEG2 encoding and decoding: Reduced CPU utilization for
speech recognition, as well as higher accuracy and faster response times
Single Inline Memory Module, SIMM, a small memory card installed in workstations,
printers a.s.o. The card has one line of contact surfaces on each side of the circuit board, where
opposite contact surfaces are connected together through via holes.
