Six Types of Simple Machines

1.Inclined plane

- It is a flat surface raised at an angle (sloping

or slanting) surface, looks like a ramp.

-It is to lift or raise a heavy object by moving up

a slope.

-Tools: Stairs, slide, and wood ramp.

2.Wedge

-These are objects with two inclined planes

positioned back to back that taper to thin edge.

-It is used to cut or split a certain materials apart.

-Tools: Nails, axes, pins, and knives.

3. Wheel and axle

- It is made up of a circular frame (wheel) that
revolves on a shaft or rod (axle).
- It is used to raise weights and carry or
transport loads over land and travel a long
distance.
- Tools: Rolling pin, doorknob, and steering
wheel.

4. Pulley
- It is a wheel carries a flexible rope, cord,
cable, chain, or belt on its rim.
- It is used to lift or raised and lower a load
easier.
- Tools: Flagpole, ropes on a sailboat, and
movable clothesline.

5. Screw
- It is a long inclined plane wrapped around a
shaft. A circular cylindrical thing with a
continuous winding or spiral rib.
- It is used to fasten or hold fastened things
and used to hold lifted objects.
- Tools: jar lid, bolt, and bottom end of a
bulb.

6. Lever
- It is a long beam or bar that rests or turns
or lifts on support (fulcrum). The lever has 3
parts: fulcrum, load, and effort.
●Fulcrum- is the supporting point of the lever.

●Effort is the force used to cause movement.

●Load is the weight being move or lifted.

-There are three classes of lever based on the

positions of the effort, load, and fulcrum.

●First Class Lever- Fulcrum is located between the

load and effort. The tools are scissors, crowbar, and
seesaw.

●Second Class Lever- load is located between the

fulcrum and effort. The tools are wagon, bottle opener,
and nutcracker.

●Third Class Lever- It is the effort that is located

between the fulcrum and load. Tools broom, stapler,
and fishing rod.

-The lever is used for lifting, removing or pulling out

objects easily.

-Tools: can opener, tweezers and wheel barrow.

Note: subject integration:

1)Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) -

Students can apply their knowledge of simple
machines in designing and constructing models or
prototypes of machines using different materials
and tools.

2) Physical Education - Students can engage in

physical activities that involve the use of simple
machines, such as using levers in sports like
javelin throw or using inclined planes in activities
like rock climbing.

2) Have students explore how the distance of the load
from the fulcrum affects the effort required to lift it.
They can try lifting different objects as loads.
3) Ask students to record their observations and draw
conclusions about the characteristics of levers.
Rubric - Criteria: Accuracy of observations and
conclusions - 15 pts.
Assessment Questions:
1) How does the distance of the load from the fulcrum
affect the effort required to lift it?
2) What are the characteristics of levers?

GROUP 2: Investigating Inclined Planes

Teaching Strategy: Problem-Based Learning
Materials: Books of different heights, toy car,
measuring tape
Significance: Students will explore how the height and
length of an inclined plane affect the force required to
move an object.
Instructions:
1) Set up inclined planes using books of different
heights.
2) Have students roll a toy car up each inclined plane
and measure the distance it travels.
3) Ask students to analyze the relationship between
the height and length of the inclined plane and the
force required to move the car.
Rubric - Criteria: Analysis of data and explanation of
findings - 20 pts.
Assessment Questions:
1) How does the height of an inclined plane affect the
force required to move an object?
2) What are the characteristics of inclined planes?

GROUP 3: Exploring Pulleys

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning
Materials: Pulleys of different sizes, ropes, weights
Significance: Students will investigate how the
number of pulleys affects the effort required to lift a
load.
Instructions:
1) Divide students into groups and provide each group
with pulleys of different sizes, ropes, and weights.
2) Instruct students to set up different pulley systems
and explore how the number of pulleys affects the
effort required to lift the load.
3) Have students discuss their findings and present
their conclusions to the class.
Rubric - Criteria: Collaboration and presentation of
findings - 25 pts.
Assessment Questions:
1) How does the number of pulleys affect the effort
required to lift a load?
2) What are the characteristics of pulleys?

GROUP 4: Building a Compound Machine

Teaching Strategy: Hands-On Learning
Materials: Various simple machines (e.g., pulleys,
levers, inclined planes), objects to lift or move,
construction materials (e.g., cardboard, tape, string)
Significance: Students will apply their understanding
of simple machines by designing and building a
compound machine that incorporates multiple simple
machines.
Instructions:
1) Provide students with a variety of simple machines
and construction materials.
2) Instruct students to design and build a compound
machine that performs a specific task, such as lifting a
heavy object or moving an object from one place to
another.
3) Have students document their design process,
including the types of simple machines used and how
they work together.
Rubric - Criteria: Design creativity and functionality -
20 pts.
Assessment Questions:
1) What is a compound machine, and how does it differ
from a single simple machine?
2) Describe the types of simple machines used in your
compound machine and explain how they work
together.
