CHAPTER- I
INTRODUCTION
ABOUT:
Bharathidasan University established in February 1982, and was named after the great
revolutionary Tamil poet, Bharathidasan (1891- 1964). The motto of the University “We will
create a brave new world” has been framed. The University endeavors to be true to such a
vision by creating in the region a brave new world of academic innovation for social change.

The University’s main campus was initially located in a sprawling area of over 1000acres
in Palkalaiperur. However, as years passed on, the South Campus at Palkalaiperur with the
available infrastructure was donated to the newly started Anna University of Technology. Very
recently, another portion of the land has been allotted to the Indian Institute of
Management(IIM), Tiruchirappalli. Also, the University has a down town campus at Khajamalai,
which housed originally the Autonomous Post- Graduate Centre of the University of Madras at
Tiruchirappalli. In addition to the administrative complex, which includes the Vice- Chancellor’s
Secretariat,Registrar’s Office, Finance and Examination Offices, most of the academic
departments and research laboratories are located in the main Palkalaiperur Campus.Among the
academic units in the Palkalaiperur Campus are Schools of Mathematics, Physical, Chemistry,
LifeSciences, Basic MedicalSciences, Geosciences, Social sciences, Marine Sciences and the
Schools of Languages. In addition, the campus also has the Central Library,University
Informatics Centre, Hostels, Staff Quarters, Health Centre, Canteen and others. The down town
campus has the Departments of Social Work, Computer Science, the Centre for Remote Sensing,
the UGC- Human Resource Development Centre (Formerly UGC- Academic Staff College) and
others. Besides these, the Bharathidasan Institute of Management popularly known as BIM
(adjudged as one of the top business schools in the country) is located within the BHEL
premises, a public sector undertaking at Tiruverumbur.

The University has totally 4 Faculties, 16 Schools, 37 Departments and 29 Specialized


Research Centers. There are 263 faculty members catering to 2564 students and scholars in the
University. The University Departments / Schools are offering 151 programmes in M.A., M.Sc.
and M.Tech.The above programmes are conducted underthe Choice Based CreditSystem

(CBCS) in Semesters: 31 M. Phil., 33 Ph. D., 19 P.G. Diploma, 11 Diploma and 10 Certificates.
The University’s supporting staff strength is 457. In addition to the regular teaching programmes
in the Departments and Schools, the University under its Distance Education mode is conducting
15 UG and 26 PG programmes. All the UG and PG programmes are conducted under non-
semester system and MCA and MBA programmes are conducted under semester system along
with the regular programmes. The MCA and MBA programmes conducted under this mode are
very popular.

With the ultimate aim of creating a brave new world, Bharathidasan University ensures the
pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning, research and extension of knowledge through higher
education.

DEPARTMENT OF LIFELONG LEARNING (DLL):


ABOUT:
The Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL) as an academic department was established
in the year 1985-86 under the sponsorship of UGC.The Department has been under taking a
number of notable programmes under its four dimensions of Extension, Capacity Building/
Training, Research and Teaching. The department has been a full-fledged statutory department
and obtained the concurrence of the State Government for the liability of the department in April
1997. The Department previously was named as Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and
Extension (CACE & E) and later it was changed as Department of Adult, Continuing Education
and Extension (DACE & E). As per the UGC guidelines, the nomenclature has been changed as
Department of Lifelong Learning during XI Five Year Plan Period.

OBJECTIVES:

• To develop Human Resources by providing professional manpower for promoting


knowledge-based society to meet the needs and challenges of the public and private
sectors in the globalized economy.
• To improve the quality and conduct the programmes in human resource management at
Post Graduate level with concurrent field exposure/In-PlantTraining and M.Phil and Ph.
D level besides need-based Certificate and Diploma Courses to produce Man power
resources of kind and number required by the society.
• To execute Grass root level Extension programmes and conduct Advanced Researches
not only human resources management but in Adult Continuing Education and
Extension and other resources management.

• To collaborate with Government department, Public Sectors, MNCs, and NGOs to link
theory to practices of human resource management and vice-versa for up graduation of
skills.
• To extend consultancy, counseling and placement services to the students, alumni,
youth, housewives, agricultural and industrial workers and professionals in all walks of
life.

M.A (HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT) COURSE:

Department of Lifelong learning offers a two-year post-graduate Job-oriented programme


M.A.in Human Resource Management (M.A.HRM) from the academic year 2009-2010. The
Human Resource professional is a critical strategic team members in today’s quickly changing
business environment. Human Resource Management can also be performed by line managers.
The M. A in Human Resource Management programme prepares candidates competent for this
challenging role.

Human Resource Management (M.A. HRM) is the function within an organization that
focus on requirement of management of, and providing direction for the people who in the
organization. HRM means employing people, developing their resource, utilizing maintaining
and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational requirement.

Ideal Industries Incorporation was started in the year 2003 by Mr. G. Santha kumar as its
Chief Executive cum Sole Proprietor, mainly to cater to the needs of various thermal power
plants (Valves’ spares & Boiler Spares’ etc.) Today ‘Ideal’ has grown up as an IBR approved
manufacturer of High-Pressure Valves; manufacturer of Soot Blowers (Long Retractable Soot
Blowers, Wall Blowers, Rotary Blowers etc.)apart from manufacture and supply of Spares for
H.P. Valves, Soot Blowers and various other equipment’s viz. Safety Valves, ESP, Coal Burners,
Oil Gas Burner, Bowl Mills, Gravimetric Feeders, Dampers & Gates etc.

DAILY ACTIVITIES
Day-1(18/03/2024):
Today, I met the head of HR department. Then, he handed him my confirmation letter
and then, I introduced myself to him. Then, he explains about Human Resource Department
(HRD) Processess.

Day-2(19/03/2024):
Today , I came to know about Employee State Insurance.
Employee State Insurance (ESI): This refers to a social security and health insurance
scheme in India. It is administered by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and
provides benefits such as medical coverage and financial assistance to employees and their
dependents in the event of sickness, maternity, disablement, or death due to employment-related
injuries.

The percentage of ESI in this company, 0.75% from employee with 3.75% from
company provides to them.
Next I Know about Provident Fund.
Provident Fund (PF):It is a financial savings scheme that is designed to help employees
save a portion of their salary regularly, with the primary goal of providing financial security and
stability for employees after their retirement.

In this company, the percentage of Provident Fund is 24% is basic PF includes12% from
company and 12% from Employee Salary.

Day-3(20/03/2024):
On this day, I got to know about monthly income, pension, bonus and overtime.
In this company, the Salary provided to Employees on 10th of every month to them bank
account.

The Bonus is 8% of Salary.

The Overtime is8*8 hours is called Single Overtime, 8*12 hours is called One and half
Overtime and 8*16 hours is called Double Overtime.

And I visited the plant. Then , I went there and saw many manufacturing activities

Day-4(21/03/2024):

Today, I learned about the HR overview of the industry.

HR overview: An HR (Human Resources) overview provides a snapshot of an


organization's HR department. It encompasses key functions such as recruitment, employee on
boarding, training, compensation, and performance management. HR plays a strategic role by
aligning its activities with the organization's goals and values, ensuring legal compliance,
fostering diversity and inclusion, and measuring employee engagement. Challenges like talent
retention and evolving labor laws are addressed, with opportunities for improving HR
effectiveness. In essence, HR is a critical department that supports and enhances the workforce,
contributing to the overall success and growth of the organization.

Day-5(22/03/2024):
Today, I got to know about the Attendance Management System(AMS).

Attendance Management System: It is a software or hardware solution used by


organizations, educational institutions, and businesses to track and manage the attendance of
employees, students, or members. Such a system helps streamline the process of recording
attendance, reduces manual errors, and provides valuable data for various purposes, including
payroll, performance evaluation, and compliance.

In this company, the attendance processes are Bio-metric and Attendance Register note.
Day-6(23/03/2024):
Today, I known that the process of Employee Selection and Goods & Services Tax.

Employee Profile: An employee profile is a comprehensive record or document that
contains essential information about an individual working with in an organization. These
profiles are typically maintained by human resources departments and can be indigital or
physical formats.

GST:GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a value- added tax levied on the
supply of goods and services in many countries around the world. It was established on 1st July,
2017. The Father of GST Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The basic idea behind GST is to replace multiple
indirect taxes with a single, unified tax, which can streamline the taxation process, reduce tax
evasion, and make it easier for businesses to comply with tax regulations.

The percentage of GST is 18% in Tamil Nadu. It differs from one category to another
category.

Day-7(25/03/2024):
On this day, I known that the process of material selection in this industry.

Material Selection Process: The material selection process is a crucial aspect of design
and manufacturing in virtually every industry. The ideal industry, in this context, can refer to any
sector where materials are used in the production of goods. Whether it's automotive, aerospace,
construction, electronics, or any other industry.

Day-8(26/03/2024):

At last, I got feedback from my Hierarchy about my Field-Exposure. Then, I submit the report to
them.

Feedback: Feedback is a process of providing information, observations, opinions, or


advice to someone about their performance, behavior, work, or actions. It is a crucial element of
personal and professional development, communication, and improvement.
Report submission: Report preparation refers to the process of creating a structured and organized
document that presents information, data, analysis, or findings on a specific topic or subject. Reports
are typically written to convey information to a particular audience, often in a formal or professional
setting.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AND CONCLUSION

Recruitment and Selection: Gain experience in creating job postings and managing
recruitment processes. Develop skills in resume screening, candidate interviewing, and reference
checking. Understand how to use applicant tracking systems (ATS) effectively.

Employee On boarding and Orientation: Learn how to facilitate the on boarding


process for new hires. Understand the importance of compliance and documentation during on
boarding.

Employee Relations: Gain experience in handling employee inquiries and concerns.


Develop skills in conflict resolution and employee mediation. Learn about employee engagement
strategies.

Training and Development: Assist in the design and delivery of training programs.
Learn how to create training materials and evaluate training effectiveness. Understand the
importance of employee development plans.

Compensation and Benefits: Gain exposure to compensation structures, salary


benchmarking, and benefits administration. Understand the basics of payroll processing. Learn
about variable pay and incentive programs.

HR Policies and Compliance: Familiarize yourself with company policies and HR best
practices. Gain knowledge of labor laws, regulations, and compliance requirements. Assist in

engagement activities. Gain an understanding of employee wellness programs and initiatives.

Conclusion:

The Field-Exposure visit is an important component of MA. HRM Programme Field


plays a pivotal role in providing the student with an opportunity to explore, learn and develop
professional skills necessary for working with employees which is the essence of the profession.
The work experiences I encountered during the In-plant training allowed me to develop skills. I
think still require to work on our skills. But the overall experience was positive, and everything I
learned would be useful in my future career in this field.

The Field-Exposure visit at Ideal Industrial Institution provided a great opportunity to


understand how an organization works, how an organization without an HR works and how it
can enhance and deal with working of an organization and its employees. The entire In-plant
training has been extremely useful for better placement and career development.
