Simple DLP WARM AIR

The document discusses a lesson on what happens when air is heated and what happens to surrounding air as warm air rises. Students will participate in group activities using materials like paper bags and candles to observe that heated air rises and surrounding air moves towards the rising warm air. The lesson aims to teach students that warm air rises because it is lighter than cold air and the movement of air is called wind.

I.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. determine what happens when air is heated;
b. identify what happens to the air in surrounding as warm air rises; and
c. understand the movement of air in our surroundings.

II.SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: What happens when air is heated?

What happens to the air in surrounding as warm air rises?
Materials: Two paper bags, candle, long straight stick, tape, chair, box, scissors,
cardboard tube, plastic, match, smoke source.

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A.PREPARATORY ACTIVITY

 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance

Review

Last meeting, we made a greenhouse model.

Right?
Yes Ma’am!
With those two bottle, which of them releases heat?
The bottle with two hole at both side Ma’am.
You’re right.

Why? The bottle with two hole releases heat because

the heat can go out and no one will trap them.
Bravo!

What about the bottle B?

The bottle with no hole retains heat because the
heat was trapped inside.
Excellent!

Like those two bottles in greenhouse the sun’s heat can

come in but they cannot go out since the heat was trapped
by the glass in the greenhouse.
Is that clear?
Yes Ma’am!
C. Presentation of the Lesson

Now we will have a group activity.

I will group you into four.
In this activity you will learn on “What happens when air is
heated?” and “What happens to the air in surrounding as
warm air rises?”.

Are you all ready?

Yes Ma’am!
i. Pre-activity

Did you bring your materials?

Yes Ma’am.
Okay. So for the group 1 and group 2 you will discover
what happens to the air when heated and for group 3 and 4
you will learn what happens to the air in the surrounding as
warm air rises.

You may now go to your respective groups and please form

a circle.

Please bring out your materials because you will need that
to do this activity.

Group 1 and Group 2 follow this procedure:

1. Attach a paper bag to each end of the stick. The open end
of each bag should be facing down.
2. Balance the stick with the paper bags on the chair.
3. Now, light the candle and place it below one of the bags.

Q1. Was your prediction accurate?

Describe what happened.
Q2. Can you explain why?

Group 3 and 4
1. Open the box and place the candle directly below the hole
on top. Light up the candle and close the box.
2. Make a prediction: What do you think will happen if you
place a smoke source near the hole?
3. Now, place the smoke source near the hole.

Q1. Was your prediction accurate?

Q2. What happened?
Q3. Can you explain why?

Is that clear?
Yes Ma’am.

iii. Activity Proper

Time’s up!

Please arrange your chairs and go back to your proper seat.

I need two representatives to present your output.
(Each group will present their output.)
Good job. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause.

iv. Post activity

What happens when you place a lighted candle under the

open end and one of the bags. It rising Ma’am!

You’re right!

Remember class that when the air warms up it rises.

Why do warm air rises?

(The students will share their ideas.)
Warm air is lighter than the cold air and so when the air is
heated it rises.
Understood? Yes Ma’am.

What happens when you place a smoke source near the

hole? (The students will share their ideas.)

The smoke from the mosquito coil moves up.

What happens to the air in the surrounding as warm air
rises? (The students will share their thoughts.)

Right!

As you look at the smoke that serves as an air since we

can’t see the air. As what we observed, the air moves toward
the place where warm air is rising.
Remember class, that when the air is moving it is called
wind.
IV. GENERALIZATION

Why do warm air rises? Warm air rises because it is lighter than cold air.

How do air moves in the surrounding? Air in the surrounding move toward the place
where warm air is rising.

Excellent!

What is a wind? Wind is the air that is moving horizontally.

Correct!

V. EVALUATION

1. What makes the air move?

2. What happens when air is heated?
3. Why do warm air rises?

VI. ASSIGNMENT

1. Define Land and Sea breeze?

2. Determine the difference between Sea and land breeze?
3. Understand the effects of the changing of the temperature in air.
