More than a hobby

1.When Wallace Stevens walked into his office every morning his colleagues didn't know about his
secret. Stevens lived a double life. By day he worked for an insurance company. The rest of his life
was spent becoming one of the greatest American poets of the twentieth century.

2. Secret talent is more common than we think, even with people who are already famous in one
area. Take Luciano Pavarotti, one of the world's greatest classical singers. Not many people know
that before he becamea singer. he was an outstanding football player. The same is true of TV chef
Gordon Ramsay. who is now well known for his brilliant cooking and his bad language. Ramsay
played professional football for Rangers, one of Scotland’s best teams.

3 A number of politicians first made their name in other jobs. Silvio Berlusconi.prime minister of
Italy and a businessman, once sang professionally on cruise ships. Winston Churchill, prime minister
of Great Britain, also had another talent: he wrote great history books. Churchill's books won him the
Nobel Prize in literature in 1953. Vaclav Havel, who was the first president of the Czech Republic, was
also a great writer.

4 There are also musicians and actors who have secret talents. Paul McCartney and David Bowie are
both painters. Paul Newman was a racing car driver and actor.Omar Sharif was one of the world's
greatest cards players. And only those who go to a little hotel bar in New York City every Monday
would know that one of the best clarinet players in town is actor and film director Woody Allen. He
certainly plays the clarinet better than Bill Clinton plays the saxophone.

Ludwig van Beethoven's music teacher once said that he was hopeless as a composer. But
Beethoven became one of the most important classical composers of all time. Although he was often
ill and finally became totally deaf, he managed to produce an extraordinary quantity of work,
including concertos, symphonies and operas. It has often been said: 'Though Beethoven wasn't able
to hear, he was able to listen'.

Benjamin Zephaniah

Millions of people around the world have heard the voice of Benjamin Zephaniah, Britain's best-
known rap poet. But Zephaniah was told by his teacher that he was a born failure', and he was
taken out of school at the age of 12 because he couldn't behave. 'I was one of those kids that kept
asking Why?' He was sent to an approved school (a kind of youth prison) and then twice to prison.
But while in prison he decided to become a poet and was able to educate himself. ‘I wasn't really
able to read and write until I was in my 20s,' Zephaniah says, He started performing with bands so
that his poems could reach people who didn't read books. Today his books of poetry are best-sellers
and one of his most famous fans is Nelson Mandela.

JK Rowling

JK Howling started writing her first Harry Potter novel while she was teaching English in Portugal. In
December 1994 she moved to a tiny flat in Edinburgh so that she could be near her sister. At that
time she was unemployed and broke, and there was a rumour that she wrote in local cafes in order
to escape from her freezing flat. But she later denied that she couldn't afford to heat her home.
Amazingly, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was rejected by several publishers - when it
was finally published in 1997 it was an instant best-seller. Rowling later became the richest woman
in Britain and one of the most successful authors in the world.

Albert Einstein

Nobel prize-winner Albert Einstein didn't speak until he was four, and couldn't read until he was
seven. One of his teachers called him 'mentally slow'. After failing the entrance examination once,
he managed to get a place at the Swiss Institute of Technology' in Zurich in 1896. Although be did
fairly well as a student in Zurich, he wasn't able to get a job at a Swiss university because he was
thought to be extremely lazy. But in 1905, at the age of 26, Einstein published his Special Theory of
Relativity, which led to the most famous equation in physics: E=mc2

Creativity at work

Read what Angela, Simon, and Naomi say about their jobs. What are their occupations? Why is
creativity important in their work?

Angela: Well, I guess I'd have to say that creativity is essential to my work. I'm an architect, and
the creative part is trying to look at old things and make them look new. I mean, we recycle a lot of
ideas and then adapt them to fit our needs. And we also have to keep on top of new trends:We have
to know all about new building styles and efficient ways to use energy - you know, the kinds of
things that homeowners worry about. No one wants a house that is heated inefficiently or looks old-
fashioned. And we work long hours, but I must say, the job's pretty interesting, You never know
what to expect next!

Simon: Well, I have my own small business. I think all business owners, especially small business
owners, have to be pretty creative. We have to do everything. I do the work, answer the phones,
take care of the accounting ... you know, there are so many potential problems, and there's no one
else to turn to. I mean, I can't ask my boss for help -I am the boss! The hardest part is figuring out
how to identify your customers. Who are they? Where are they? How can you get to them? You also
need to think creatively about the competition. How can you make your business services more
attractive than what the competition has to offer? Well, it's challenging, and I think it requires a lot
of creativity.

Naomi: I'm an interior designer, so what I do is go into people's homes and create a suitable
environment for them. You know - my clients - they don't know what they want, so I have to look at
their homes and decide what would look best. Not every idea

Writing : Beginning new paragraphs

A Read this composition and decide where the writer changes focus. Write a (P) where you think
each new paragraph should begin.

Lucy Gomez is the most creative person I know. She started piano lessons when she was only 6
years only, At school, she was always creating interesting projects in her art class. When she was
only 12 years old, she won a citywide poetry contest. Her parents were very proud of her. Now Lucy
works as a sitcom writer for a popular TV show. She works with a group of writers, and together
they have to think of fresh ideas. They also have to come up with funny dialogue for the actors on
their show Because the actors have to play believable characters that will make the audience laugh.
It is not an easy job, but Lucy does —-—© if welt. She starts work late in the morning and <^*

Qualities of creative people

In these activities, Ss are introduced to the qualities that creative people have and the
types of creativity needed for several different jobs.

1 Books closed. Ask Ss if they think they are creative people. Have Ss respond with a
show of hands. Then brainstorm with the class some adjectives to describe the qualities
of creative people. Write all responses on the board.

2 Books open. Have Ss look at the list of adjectives to see if any of the ones they
mentioned are listed. Check that Ss understand the following:

3 Explain the task and have Ss work individually, first to decide which of the qualities
creative people usually have, and then to rank the qualities they chose from most to least
important. Have Ss add other qualities of their own.

4 Have Ss compare answers with a partner. Then have selected Ss or volunteers share
their ideas with the class.

5 Optional: Write the most popular answers on the board. Then have the class discuss
which of the top three or four answers is really the most important quality for creative
people to have.

B Pair work

1 Books open. Explain the task and have Ss read the model language in the speech
balloon. Then put Ss in pairs to discuss whether or not each job requires a high degree of
creativity and what qualities are needed for each job. Encourage Ss to give reasons and
examples to support their answers, and to ask and answer follow-up questions.

182

ng the mind to work

2 Have several Ss share their answers for each of the six jobs. Lead a class discussion
as appropriate.

Optional activity: Creativity - only for the arts?

Time: 15-20 minutes, Ss have a debate about creativity in jobs.

1 Group work Books closed. Write on the board: Creativity is only necessary for people
who work in occupations such as design, photography, and the arts. Split the class into
groups A and B. Tell Ss in group A to think of as many reasons as they can in favor of the
statement. Tell Ss in group B to think of as many reasons as they can against the
statement,
2 Have Ss work individually before putting Ss in groups of three to compare answers
and think of additional reasons. Then form groups of six by combining three Ss from
group A and three Ss from group B. Have Ss take turns presenting and discussing their
ideas, for and against. Then have two Ss from each group present their most convincing
statements to the class.

Creativity at work

listening In these activities, Ss listen to people talking about why creativity is needed
for the kinds of jobs they do.

1 Books open. Explain the task and lead Ss through the chart, making sure they know
what information they need to complete it. Remind Ss to fill in the chart in note form. Play
the audio program. Encourage Ss to take notes, but allow them to only listen at this point.

2 Optional: Pre-teach any items from the following vocabulary that you think will help
your Ss:

essential necessary

architect a person who designs buildings as a profession trends general developments or

changes in the way people do things potential possible

interior designer a person who plans the decoration of the inside of buildings as a
profession

3 Replay the audio program, this time pausing briefly after each speaker has finished so
that Ss can fill in the chart. Remind Ss that they only need to write a few words for each
person. Have Ss compare answers with a partner. Replay the audio program as necessary
before going over the answers with the class.

works in every home,You have to match the appropriate idea with the right place. After I
come up with an idea, I present it to my client. Sometimes they don't like my first idea,
and boy, that can be frustrating. You have to start all over again. So I need creativity to
both come up with the ideas and to communicate them. Creativity also comes in handy
when I want to convince a client that my idea is the best one, I don't always succeed, but
I do manage to get my way a lot of the time.
B Pair work

1 Books open. Read the questions aloud to the class. Then put Ss in pairs to discuss the
questions.

2 Optional: Have selected Ss share their answers with the class. Write responses on the
board in note form. Then check how many other Ss in class have the same or similar
answers.

Reduced relative clauses

grammar This grammar focus presents reduced relative clauses that define or describe
foCUS the subject.

Grammar notes These relative douses consist of a subject + relative pronoun

(who/that/which) + be + verb.To reduce a relative clause, the relative pronoun and toe
are deleted and the verb is changed to the -ing form (e.g., a person [who is] working as a
screenwriter). Once reduced, the clause becomes an adjective phrase.

The adjective phrase is bound within a noun phrase and defines and describes that noun
phrase (e.g., a person [noun phrase] working as a screenwriter [adjective phrase]).

These reduced relative clauses (or adjective phrases) must come immediately after the
nouns they describe because they give essential information about that noun or noun
phrase. They are not separated from the noun phrase by commas.

1 Books closed. Ask Ss to call out a few occupations while you write them on the board.
Now ask Ss to write a sentence for each occupation, describing the qualities or abilities a
person needs to do the job well. Provide this example: A person who works as an
interpreter should be able to think fast and effectively. Have volunteers write their
sentences on the board.

2 Rewrite your example on the board to contain a reduced clause (i.e., A

person working as an interpreter should be able to think fast and effectively).

3 Books open. Lead Ss through the information and example sentences in the grammar
box. Then have Ss convert the other sentences on the board in the same way.

Skills

Speak

1 What kind of person do you have to be in order to be successful? Choose three ideas from the box
and rank them in order of importance.

You have to be

aggressive ambitious* clever confident* creative dedicated* determined* energetic*

enthusiastic* flexible focused good with people hard-working intelligent* lucky
motivated* single-minded talented*

You have to have

self-belief a sense of humour

Compare ideas with a partner. Do you have any other ideas? What are the nouns from the
adjectives marked *?

Listen

You are going to hear nine people answering the question. im Listen and tick {¦/) the ideas you
hear. Do any speakers share your views?

Read

1 You are going to read an article about how to become a success. Do you think the following
statements are generally True or False?

You are more likely to be successful in life: a if you are brought up by two parents b if you get good
qualifications at school c if your parents are rich d if you are beautiful.

2 Now read the article to check your ideas. Were they correct?

So yotfwant to be a success?

Lose a parent: only 5% of successful entrepreneurs had both parents present through childhood

You would think that you would need the loving support of two parents for the best start in life, but
surprisingly

5 this is not always the case. For entrepreneurs the death or long-term absence of a parent appears
to be what actually launches them on a successful career. Unstable family backgrounds have a
similar effect on artists, but not, strangely enough, on those who make science their

10 career. Studies show that future scientists only do well if their home-life is stable and secure.

Do badly at school: almost two-thirds of our top earners left

school early
You would expect a good academic record at school tc

is be a guarantee of future success. But the rules and regulations of the classroom tend to irritate
future entrepreneurs, who often leave school as soon as they can, usually without any formal
qualifications. However, those planning a more orthodox career - as employees in a large

20 organization, for example - should try to do as well at school as they can.

Start off rich: 25% of those who head large companies were borr

into wealthy families

There is a popular saying that the first million is the

25 hardest to make. But there is one sure short-cut: inherit it. Even today, wealth gives an
advantage right at the start of their careers to those who possess it. Of course, those who are born
rich have little incentive to fight their way towards a fortune. But the self-confidence that comes

30 from having money undoubtedly helps its owners to get top jobs.

Be born beautjfuljood looks open up routes to the top that have nothing to do with merit

It is unfair, but beautiful people also often seem to have 35 a bigger than average share of
intelligence and charm. However, it can be a disadvantage to be too beautiful, especially if-you are a
woman. You may be seen simply as a decorative ornament, and find that your less attractive
contemporaries fight their way to the top ahead of you.

1 Do you like exams? Do you usually do well in exams? Why or why not?

2 Read this short text. Has something similar ever happened to you or to someone you know?

Exploitation

To do well at school, college or university you usually need to do well in exams. 'All students hate
exams' may be a generalization, but it is a fairly true one. Certainly, all of the students I've known
disliked doing exams. None of them thought that the exam system was fair; to do well in an exam
you simply had to be able to predict the questions which would be asked. This was the case as
regards two students in my class at college. Both of them were exceptionally bright, but in the final
year exam neither of them got an A grade. In fact, they both got Cs. The exam had tested us on
questions which had come up the previous year. They had both assumed that the same questions
wouldn't come up again, and hadn't prepared for them.

Exploring concepts

Underline the phrases in the text which refer to two or more people, as in the example.

Which of the underlined expressions is

a a generalization?

b something specific about more than two people?

c something specific about two people (positive)?

d something specific about two people (negative)?

Read these sentences and answer the questions about both,

a Both students are clever.

b Neither student has the necessary qualifications. Neither of

them has the necessary qualifications. c None of the students has failed the exam, d Antonio sat

Hi!

I'm a language student. I have an exam in one month but I'm having problems studying for it. I
share a bedroom with my thirteen-year-old brother, who is very noisy. I've tried studying in the
library (the hours aren't very good - it closes at 7.00), in the park (too windy) and at school (also
noisy). I really want to do well in my exam but I just can't find the right place to study. Also, I have
problems concentrating. I can read for an hour but after that I get bored and I can't concentrate.
Any advice?
